Happy 50th Birthday Canadian Flag!
This morning all the staff & student of Nelson met at our flagpole to recognize National Flag Day as we sang Oh Canada & division 8’s very own Emily raised Nelson’s flag with Yi & Michael!
Click on the mountie below to see the video!
Thanks to all the students who wore red, ‘Canada’ clothes or their club’s uniform. What a wonderful, sunny day to celebrate being Canadian!
Click on the smiley below for pictures of our celebration!
Our red & white maple leaf flag was first raised over Parliament Hill 50 years ago on February 15, 1965. This is a significant & special milestone as Canadians prepare for the 150th anniversary of Confederation in 2017.
The 50th anniversary of our National Flag in 2015 gives Canadians an opportunity to reflect on what our flag represents ~ a strong, proud and free country.
Click on the Canada Flag above to take a quiz on how well you know
Canada’s flag! Good Luck Nelsonites!
Tell us how you did below in the Comments! Did our discussion with Mrs. Roberts in Library last week help you answer any of the questions?

CANADA DAY ADVENTURES!

I hope everyone had lots of fun celebrating Canada Day!! I always wish we were still in school for the holiday so we could celebrate together & continue to learn lots of cool things about our fabulous country of Canada! Make sure to answer the poll & share what you did with your family &/or friends!
I went to a bbq & got to visit with one of my very best friends from Simon Fraser University, Allyson. She moved to Baltimore, Maryland with her husband 6 years ago & this was her first time back in 4 years! I missed her! We ate lots of good food & I got to play with her two kids, Connor & Grace. We’ll be travelling down to Seattle for the 4th of July before they get back on a plane to fly home on Saturday. I’ll share pictures of all the cool stuff we’re sure to see as Seattle celebrates their country’s big day!

TERRY FOX RUN 2013
Nelson students participated in our annual Terry Fox Run on Friday.
After only a week of fundraising, bringing in Toonies for Terry & collecting pledges, we raised $1430 for the Terry Fox Foundation!! Incredible!! Our fundraising in the last couple years has been: 2011 ~ $502 & 2012 ~ $642. We’ve more than doubled our last year’s total & this year’s goal! That’s the highest total that’s been collected since I started at Nelson 6 years ago & I’m so proud of all of your hard work!

Burnaby Art Gallery ~ Memories of Place
Division 9 made the short journey to the Burnaby Art Gallery this Wednesday. Thank you parent drivers!! We were there to see 2 exhibits & create some art!
On the 1st floor we saw the Arts Alive exhibit which featured the works of talented Burnaby students. It showcased student paintings, drawings & sculptures depicting a place that holds special memories. We grabbed a clipboard & became gallery detectives & went on a Gallery Search to find key images in the works of art. We found a Pharaoh, fireworks, nighttime, & even a watermelon!
Click here to see their amazing works of art! Well done to all the young artists!
On the gallery’s 2nd floor we saw Focus on the Collection: Wood Engraving which featured a selection of wood engravings which the gallery has been collecting over the past 60 years. We took our clip boards around & studied & drew setting, line detail, & how the artists depicted calm & movement.
The second part of our visit was in the fireside room where we created our own paintings using watercolour paints & watercolour crayons depicting a place that holds special memories . Click on the tree above to see Division 9 artists at work!
