IMG_7695N ~ We wrote NOTES to next year’s class, giving them the low down on what it means to be in Mrs. James’ class. Mrs. James will be sharing them all with her new students when she returns from maternity leave in September 2017!…or maybe just the ones that were kind… 😉

K is for KERNELS & M is for MOVIE

K ~ KERNELS
of popcorn
We popped some popcorn in a couple old fashioned hot air popcorn poppers, including the one that Miss Watt used as a Grade 3 student! It was so cool to see it close up instead of waiting outside a microwave!

J is for JUMPY SCIENCE

Poppin_Rockets_0128J ~ JUMPY Poppin Rockets! Science with baking soda & vinegar!
We created a chemical reaction in a film canister! The vinegar reacts with the baking soda and produces carbon dioxide gas. Pressure builds up until the small canister can no longer contain the gas. The lid pops off, the canister shoots up into the air, the gas escapes, and the pressure is released.

I is for ICKY SCIENCE

(click on the picture for a bigger view)
oobleck-directions1I ~ ICKY messy fun with Oobleck! Science with cornstarch & water!

Oobleck is a non-newtonian fluid. That is, it acts like a liquid when being poured, but like a solid when a force is acting on it. You can grab it and then it will ooze out of your hands.
Oobleck gets its name from the Dr. Seuss book Bartholomew and the Oobleck where a gooey green substance, Oobleck, fell from the sky and wreaked havoc in the kingdom.

IMG_4811
E ~ JujubesM&Ms, Jelly BeansMike&Ikes… Count the Candies!!

We spent the morning using referents & good ‘ol fashioned thoughtful guesses to ESTIMATE how many candies were in the jars.

After all the Guessing Jar estimates had been counted, the winners were announced in the afternoon. Drumroll please………

Lincoln, Benson, Shathu & Cayla had the closest estimates with Lincoln making a perfect estimate!!
Well done to all Division 8 students for their excellent estimates! Can’t wait to enjoy the candies at another Alphabet Countdown day very soon…
