Assignment Details for Chick Journal Entry for Days 1-9

Our chick eggs are continuing to develop and grow, and we are on day 9 of our egg development calendar! There have been many changes inside the egg. The chick that is growing inside the egg is called an embryo (please see the picture below about the embryo).

Task/Assignment: Once you have read the changes that are happening inside the egg, you are to choose one day of development and write a journal entry from the perspective of the embryo. Think about the following things: What do you think it’s like living inside and egg? What do you think you can hear, see and feel? This is very similar to the writing that we did in 1st term, where we wrote a diary entry from the perspective of a crayon when we read The Day the Crayons Came Home written by Drew Daywalt.

Criteria:

· Start with Dear Diary or Dear Journal,

· Make sure that you write about the changes that are happening to your embryo

· Do you have a catchy beginning and interesting ending?

· Are there details and description?

· Show don’t tell!

· Use triple scooped words

· Entry should be 8-12 long.

**Due: April 17th Friday Evening (Please submit via Fresh Grade)

Please see the following Journal Entry Sample Written by and Embryo for Day 3.

Dear Diary,

Can I let you in on a secret? Don’t tell anyone what I’m about to tell you…I am a CHICKEN! No, I don’t mean chicken, like a bird, I mean C-H-I-C-K-E-N!!! Still don’t get it? Here’s a clue: “Cluck, Cluck Cluck” No, I am not clucking right now!!! Ughh! CHICKEN, like a scaredy cat!

Oh No! I don’t want to think about cats right now! Anyways, what I mean is that I’m scared! Terrified! Anyone in my situation would be a chicken! It’s dark inside here! I’m all alone, well inside my egg I am (I know there’s twelve other embryos next to me). I mean who isn’t scared of the dark? To make matters worse, I’ve been hearing loud noises! I’m not imagining things! I’m also not making it up! It’s a LOUD, BEATING noise, that’s coming inside the egg, it’s like a drum, going “thump, thump, thump”. As each hour passes it gets louder! Please help me! You got to get me out of here!!

Please note that the following pictures were from a unit purchased on Teachers Pay Teachers and created and copyright by Teacher’s Breathing Space. Please do not forward or use the pictures for any other purposes other than to share with your child the stages of the developing egg. Thank you!

Our online learning journey begins…

Good morning Division 8 Families,

We hope you had a good long, Easter weekend at home with your family.  We would first like to thank you for your patience as we Navigate through learning online.  This is and has been a huge learning curve for all of us and we want you to know we greatly appreciate your patience with getting things up and running.  We have a few updates we would like to pass along to everyone.  This is a fairly long message, but please read all the way through as it has vital information.

As many of you already noticed there was an email from Epic! It is another great resource for reading. Thank you to those that have registered as there will be books assigned to read on there for activities.

Our platform for learning and assessment is ready to go. The platform for learning will be a classroom blog. Access to the blog will be from our school website, under classes and division number (DIV.8) beside our names Silva/ Sharma or  http://sd41blogs.ca/silvad/.

Every Monday Morning, we will post the Shape of the Week on the blog to view.  This will have activities, under subject headings.  Each week we will have some mandatory assignments and some activities are optional.   Students are encouraged to participate in 2-3 activities a day.  We will start off slow as we are all going to be learning new formats, websites and platforms together as a community. The blog will eventually have different tabs/ pages to access with different information. Some Tabs may be: The Home Page will provide updates, announcements and The Shape of the Week tasks. The Resource Page will have extra links for viewing activities and learning. The Daily Physical Activities:  This will have some activities you can do with your child, or have your child do outside or inside to burn some energy and keep active.

Not everything is up yet on the blog but slowly things will be added each day.

We will be using Fresh Grade for assessment purposes. Assignments/work are to be submitted through Fresh Grade. This platform allows both parents and teachers to monitor the work of the student, while the child can share their learning with their teachers and parents in an online environment.

If students are using a mobile device (phone, tablet, iPad) once they have completed their work, they can upload or take a picture/video of their assignment and/or comment, type a message about their work. When using a desktop or laptop, students can download or print documents to work on them (word document) and after completion can upload them.

Once assignments are sent to us, the teacher responsible for that specific assignment will comment or give feedback to each student. These comments are simultaneously visible to both parents and students.

You will be receiving an invite via email to join Fresh Grade as a parent. (Please follow the given instructions). You can either download the Fresh Grade parent app from your mobile device or access via your computer. Once you have accepted the invite, you will be sent your child’s access code. Please ensure that you supervise your child when they are using ANY technology or learning platform that connects via the internet (Fresh Grade included) as you would normally do.

Looking forward to taking our e-learning journey together and thank you for your patience.
Kindly,

Ms. Silva & Ms. Sharma

Welcome to Online Learning

Hello to Division 8 and Parents,

We really enjoyed being able to connect with so many of you either by phone call or email last week. You all seem to be doing well, engaging in many wonderful activities with your families.  We are very fortunate to be able to work with such a wonderful group of students and families.

Thank you for being patient with us as we learn and investigate ways we can best support our students with online learning.  We are currently learning  to navigate through this NEW Class Blog which we hope to have up and running after the Easter weekend. We are also trying to find learning platforms for online learning that will be most effective and useful for our students.

The idea of this blog is a way to communicate and stay connected. On this site we will be sharing activities, resources, and some helpful tips to keep learning happening at home.  We are also hoping to have assignments posted here as well.

It is taking us some time to get things organized for learning at home, but as you know, we have set up a few programs (not without issues of coarse)  that students can be working on for now.  We know there has been a lot of information sent out to you in the last little while and we are trying to be cognizant of this.  We believe this blog will help minimize the emails.

For now this is a recap of what has been set up for learning at home:

  • Raz- Kids:  provides comprehensive leveled reading resources for students and allows students to listen to, read at their own pace, and record themselves reading at their reading level.
      • Go to Razkids.com   Click:  KIDS LOGIN
      • Choose Teacher dsilva35  and then enter password: (2 symbols)
      • If you are in need of  password please contact one of us to send it to you
  • Epic:  We have added your child to our classroom on Epic!. It is not something you have to use. It is important to be reading at home everyday, as you know kids love it and it is important for literacy development. We know that libraries are closed and if we are able to get into some inquiry activities, Epic! has many books to explore. It is also a great tool if you find your resources at home are limited. Please don’t feel like you have to read on Epic everyday, it is just a helpful tool if you need reading material.
  • Splash Math (Splash Learn): Math learning program for fun math practice
      • Go to Splashlearn.com    Click: Sign in
      • Click: Class         Enter Class cod :  WZNZKD
      • Select Profile: Find your name and click on it
      • If you are in need of your child’s password please contact one of us to send it to you

We have also send an email with a set of tasks students can be working on, some to be completed this week and next. The tasks include:

  • KWL Chart for Chick Unit (Was Due April 8th )
  • Title Page for Chick Journal (Due April 14th)
  • Covid-19 Time Capsule (Ongoing)

You may be asking a few questions:

  • Will there be a lot of screen time involved? Our hope is to balance activities out so that our students are not spending hours on the screen and are getting outside to get fresh air.  We would also prefer kids to read actual books and will be touching base with you to reach out and get some books to you in the next week.
  • Where can I find communication from you? Once this Blog is up and running we will be sharing communications here,  Until then it will be through email.  Individual communication, specific to your child, will always be through email
  • Do I need to schedule a full day 9-3 of school? No, learning at home will look different for everyone. Realistically, 1-2 hours is all that will really get done. It is important to keep routines happening at home. For example, when children get up in the morning have breakfast, brush teeth, get dressed, discuss activities for the day etc. plan food and physical activity breaks. Be flexible, some activities might not get done, it might not be the right moment for the learning to happen. Children learn most when they are curious! If you follow their interest you will all have more fun.
  • How can I get in touch with you? We will be working at home on school related things between 9AM to 3PM.  Ms. Silva, Monday and Tuesday and alternating Wednesday and  Ms. Sharma, alternating Wednesday, and Thursday and Friday.  If you send an email, to both of us, the teacher who’s day it is should answer you pretty quickly. We are more than happy to answer questions or just chat, please don’t be afraid to contact us.

Once again, Thank you for your patience as we learn new platforms and explore different ways of supporting you and your child’s learning at home. We hope that this information is not overwhelming. Please know we will figure this out together! We look forward to connecting with you more!

Warm Regards,

D.Silva & S. Sharma
