Our Drumming Journey

Our class has been working hard with Ms. Petrovska this term to learn the techniques of bucket drumming! Check out this incredible video below, put together by D, to highlight some of our best work. Click HERE to watch and we hope you enjoy :).

News From the Week of Feb. 24th

A member of our Blogging Crew has found some interesting events going on in the news! Take a look below:

Hello hello! (As you probably know) I’m V and I am officially the class’s official NEWS LADY! (Applause) Thank you, thank you. I will write about happy news, exciting news, cool news, just positive news in general! With that out of the way, let’s light up your day! Here’s the daily news: Did you know there is now a pillow fighting championship?

Ouch! But still awesome right? It’s literally like boxing but with pillows! The rules are: no kicking, no punching, and all you must do is land the most hits on your opponent. Who knew a game you would play with your siblings at night would turn into a real championship! Would you play this full-fledged game? Let me know!

Did you know that February 24, 2022, in the United States is National Chili Day? This is where people celebrate and honor the legendary dish, chili! It’s also Flag Day in Mexico where the people of Mexico celebrate the legend of their flag. It’s also International I Hate Coriander Day, in the U.S. where haters of the herb, coriander, get together to, well I guess just like hate coriander. Apparently, hating coriander can be actually genetic! I guess because my family loves coriander, that’s why I do too! In Romania, they celebrate a holiday called Dragobete. Ten days after Valentine’s Day, it’s dedicated to nature and love. Independence Day in Estonia is the country’s national day that represents the founding the Republic of Estonia. National Toast Day in the U.K. and the U.S. is where we pay respect to the food that gets us through the day! Next is Tortilla Chip Day, also in the U.S. where everyone lays back, and eats these wonderfully crunchy chips. Unless yours are somehow soggy! What was your favourite day? Do you know of any of these or celebrate any of them? Let me know! Thanks for reading your weekly news and see you at school! (So, I know today isn’t the 24th, but blame it on Ms. Ramen for not posting it.)

Introducing Div.4’s Blogging Crew!

This term, instead of having Ms. Ramen write the posts for our blog, we decided to take over! We are the members of Div.4’s Blogging Crew and thought that this would be a great way to show our leadership and technology skills while creating a digital newspaper of sorts that highlights different things going on in our classroom, school, and our world.  Can you guess who we are?

I am a person whose favourite sport is soccer.

I am a person who loves to play chess.

I am a person who loves to play soccer and hates swimming.

I am a person who absolutely loves to read and write short stories.

I am a person who loves to figure skate and loves books.

I am a person who loves mountain biking and Greek mythology !

I am a person who loves rubber ducks.

I am a person who likes playing video games!

I am a person who is quirky and loves to read and draw!

Functional Closure Package

Dear Families of Division 4,

Today, we compiled a variety of activities that we would be using in the event of a Functional Closure. A Functional Closure of our school would only occur if there is not enough staff available to keep our school running safely and provide adequate learning support. If this were to happen, students would have to learn at home for approximately 7-10 days. Therefore, the package provided should remain in a safe place in your home and should only be used if we do need to transition to learning at home. This package would be used in tandem with the schedule and activities posted on our class blog.

As part of this functional closure package, students have activities to complete that would require them to use a device for research, to watch educational videos, or to complete some mathematical problem solving games. All of the necessary links can be found on the right hand side of our blog under the appropriate header.

If you need any further guidance or clarification, please feel free to reach out and we can discuss how to best utilize the resources to help your child navigate the activities provided.  🙂

Welcome Back / Return to School

Dear Division 4,

Happy New Year! I hope you were all able to have a restful winter break and enjoy time spent with family, even with all this snow! The transition into the new year / term 2 has not been ideal but I do know that whatever gets thrown our way, it will not be as daunting as it was the first time. Please note that this week (Jan. 4 – 7) is a non-instructional week.

I am excited to see all of you on January 10th but in the meantime, it would be very helpful if you were able to fill in a brief survey so that I can have a better sense of the following ( I have sent out this information in an email as well):

  1. the start up to the new year
  2. virtual learning/ technology in the home

Please click the link for survey access: https://forms.office.com/r/rJcA0rcmyp

On another note, snow can be a controversial topic in the lower mainland. How do you feel about our recent snowfall? Do you feel more like image 1 or image 2? Comment below!

I hope to see you all very soon! 🙂

From Accessible Schools to Accessible Playgrounds

Over the past couple of months, our class has analyzed different schools around the world and in Canada. We have had ongoing discussions about the variety of ways in which schools are designed and how they can best be designed to fit the needs of all learners who attend. Check out this very interesting learning model from Japan below! Our class has worked alongside Division 5 to create classrooms that are accessible and meet the needs of all students who might be in attendance. For instance, we discussed how it would be beneficial for schools to have signs in brail to accommodate and demonstrate acceptance for students who are visually impaired. Another example was creating larger classrooms so students with physical disabilities can have an easier time maneuvering around the class furniture as well as allowing more space for flexible seating options.

Recently, the City of Burnaby has created a survey for Burnaby residents to see how they can create more accessible and inclusive playgrounds at Halifax Park and Squint Lake Park. If you’d like to participate here is the link: https://burnaby.civilspace.io/en/projects/playgrounds

This is a great opportunity for everyone in the household to collaborate and have a rich discussion about inclusion while creating change at the same time!

The Book Fair Has Come to Lochdale!

The Scholastic Book Fair has arrived at Lochdale this week! Intermediate students will be able to purchase books or other items from the fair between 1-3  on Wednesday and Thursday. If students would like to purchase a book from the book fair online, please click HERE! A majority of the proceeds go towards helping purchase new books and materials for the Lochdale library. The last day to purchase anything from the book fair is December 3rd.  Happy browsing!

Traditional Territories & Language Revitalization

Over the past few weeks, our class has had our Indigenous Resource Teacher come in to teach us more about the land on which we live. We learned how the city of Burnaby is situated on the traditional and ancestral lands of the Coast Salish peoples which include the Musqueam, Squamish, and the Tsleil-Waututh.

We then practiced how to properly pronounce the names of the Musqueam, Squamish and the Tsleil-Waututh. The video below unpacks how to correctly say certain symbols and letters along with what ‘7’ is used for  🙂 ! Learning languages from different cultures is a great form of cultural exchange. However,  it was also important that we discuss the legacy of colonialism and the importance of  language revitalization. Many Indigenous families are still faced with trying to learn their traditional languages since that right was sadly taken away from them because of different government policies. This included the policy that students who attended residential schools were not allowed to speak in their traditional language and faced punishment if they tried. It is important for us to celebrate the resilience and remarkable efforts of all Indigenous groups who are fighting to recover their language.  The website, Native Land, is a fantastic resource for looking up the number of different Indigenous languages spoken in BC, Canada, and around the world!

Xylophones!

Our class has been working hard with Ms. Petrovska, our music teacher, to learn all about percussion and how to play the xylophones. We have learned the song, Lemonade Blues, as well as the different types of instruments included in the percussion family. Click HERE to watch our performance!
