Our first S.T.E.M. challenge!

The children were excited to take part in their first S.T.E.M./S.T.E.A.M challenge.

What does S.T.E.M. or S.T.E.A.M. stand for?  It stands for a blend of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Mathematics. S.T.E.A.M. challenges get children to practice all parts of their Core Competencies. It promotes innovative thinking and teamwork.

This week the children had to work in small groups and use their Core Competency skills to create a device that launches paper confetti into the air. It was amazing to hear and see their ideas. The children were very excited to share their group`s creation. At the end of the session, the children got to share their successes and challenges throughout the challenge.

We look forward to the next challenge!

Sometimes I Feel Like A Fox

The children were really excited to read Danielle Daniel`s book, Sometimes I Feel Like A Fox. This book introduces us to the Anishinaabe traditions of totem animals. We started off the lesson by discussing our favourite animals, and what attributes or characteristics we admire about them. The children got to pick animals to represent different members of their family. They then got to make a portrait of themselves with their chosen animal. Their portraits and write-up can be seen on our classroom wall. Please make sure to ask your children what animals they choose to represent themselves and their family.

This is a great introduction to our Social Studies and Science units!

Using our Core Competencies skills during Math!

These last few weeks the children have been focusing on using their Core Competencies skills during math time.

Two activities they have enjoyed doing:

  1. Number-line sorting: As a way to jump start our Place Value unit, the children had to create numbers from 1-100o and organize them from least to greatest. Their challenge was to work as a group and organize all their numbers as a group. During this time the children got to practice their communication skills, as well as their co-operation skills.

2.The answer is: The children were given an answer, and had to come up with the equation. It was amazing to see what questions they came up with. We have a lot of creative and critical thinkers!

We invite you to try these activities at home!

Peace is…

Division 7 students have worked very hard and thoughtfully on what peace means to them and our community. We have been immersed in activities and conversations related to Remembrance Day.

Their sense of creativity and imagination really shined through during our “Peace is…” poem activity.

The children look forward to sharing their poems with each other. We will have a poetry share out tomorrow morning. We invite families to come in and read our poems.

Our Water Works Workshop!

Here is a glimpse into our Water Works Workshop. We continued our discussion about our water system in comparison to other places around the world.

We started our investigation by watching a quick video about how water travels in and around our neighbourhood. The children had many insightful questions and wonders.

“I wonder how old our water pipes are?”

“I wonder how long it took for them to build it?”

“I wonder why they just can`t build the same water system in Uganda?”

Through out our stations the children got to practice their communication skills  by collaborating and working together. They built some pretty neat water systems! They also got to use their creative and critical thinking skills as they moved their thoughts and ideas around to each station.

A special thank you to all the families that donated special materials for us to explore and investigate with!

Our Water School Presentation

Division 7 and 8 students were very lucky to have a wonderful presentation about the Water School Program. We were very eager and excited to learn and discuss how a Ugandan Community gets access to clean water. We thank our wonderful guest for his time and effort. This presentation made us reflect on how lucky we are to have access to fresh, clean water. We walk away feeling inspired and very thankful.

Please feel free to ask your child about the presentation. Here are some questions to consider:

  1. What did you learn about the Water School Program?
  2. How does the community get access to water?
  3. What steps do they take to get fresh/clean water?
  4. What differences did you notice between our access to water, and theirs?
  5. What wonders do you still have?
