Happy Holidays!

We want to wish you and your families a Happy Holiday Season and a Happy New Year!  It has been amazing getting to know our class over the past few months and we can’t wait to continue on our learning adventures in the New Year.

Today as a class we watched our December Virtual COLA assembly.  You should have received and email earlier today with a link that you can use to view it at home if you would like to.  The link is only valid until Sunday and our class is in the video a couple times so look out for us.

We have been very busy the past few weeks making lots of crafts and reading lots of books.  One of the ones we read today was called Tough Cookie A Christmas Story by  Edward Hemingway.  At the end of the story there were some recipes that some of the students wanted me to share so they have been uploaded to our class Teams account (you will need to log in using your child’s information that was sent home a couple weeks ago.

Enjoy the winter break and we look forward to seeing everyone in the New Year!

Virtual Library Visit

Today we had a great opportunity to have a virtual Library visit with the children’s librarian Ms. Ana Calabresi from the McGill branch of the Burnaby Public Library.   We had a virtual tour of the library where we got to see lots of great areas that we could choose books from if we were to visit and then we even got to hear a story!

Many of the students mentioned that they had not visited the library before and were excited to learn that they could get their own library card for free with their parent’s permission.  On Monday we will be sending home an application form for library cards so if your child is interested in getting a Burnaby Public library card you can return the form to us in class by December 4th and we will get it to Ms. Calabresi or you can fill it out and drop it off at the library yourself which is a great way to see in person what the library has to offer!

Thank you Ms. Calabresi and the Burnaby Public Library for our virtual tour!

Spreading Community Kindness

Today along with Division 15 our class stood along Gilmore Avenue to spread some kindness and cheer to community members who were passing by.  In partners our class decorated signs that had kind phrases on them and we smiled, waved and cheered as people drove and walked by.   We loved hearing all the honks and seeing all the smiles.   Thank you to everyone who came by, we hope we spread a bit of cheer to your day!

The Spiders Are Here….

Or at least we have started learning about spiders in class.  Last week we had a discussion about the things we know already about spiders (accessing prior knowledge) and talked about what we want to learn/wonder about spiders.  The class wrote their ideas down on post it notes and we now have them up on our big spider for us to refer back to while we are learning.  We also did a class poll about who was afraid of spiders and then graphed our results.

Happy Thanksgiving!

We were very lucky to have a special guest reader come visit our class last week to read us one of his favourite Thanksgiving story books.  Thank you Mr. Klarich for reading to our class.

We have been reading lots of stories and one of them was Leaf Man by Lois Ehlert that follows the journey of Leaf Man as he travels by wind.  A Leaf Man’s got to go where the wind blows.

These are the Leaf People we made from leaves and other items we found on the school grounds.

We hope you have a fantastic long weekend.  Happy Thanksgiving!

Happy Lunar New Year

With Lunar New Year fast approaching we read a couple of books this week.  One was called The Great Race The Story of the Chinese Zodiac by Dawn Casey and we also read Sam and The Lucky Money by Karen Chinn.  We learned about the story of how the Rat became the first character of the Chinese Zodiac and also about how we should be appreciative for what we have and help others when we can.

We ended our day with a visit to the big building by the annex Dragons.  Each class designed their own Dragon and we visited our Big Buddies.

Have a wonderful weekend and stay dry!

Snow Day!!

It is amazing how different the atmosphere is when it is a snowy day at school.  On Friday we were excited to see the little bit of snow that was on the ground but this morning oh my!

Here is a picture of the mitten art we did last week and some photos of our class painting the snow today.

With the colder weather upon us please make sure that your child has a full change of clothes and inside shoes at school and comes dressed for our always changing weather outside .

Happy Holidays!

Wow what a busy past couple of weeks we have had.  A visit to Science World, a Gingerbread Man hunt through the school, not one but TWO concert performances, making graham cracker houses with our Big Buddies and a yummy Pancake Breakfast today from our PAC.   December has been filled with amazing experiences with lots of opportunities for learning and exploring.

We hope that you are able to spend lots of time with your friends and family over the next two weeks and we will see you on January 6th 2020 when the school reopens.

Wishing You a Safe and Joyous Holiday and a Happy New Year!

Literacy Week Jan 29 – Feb 1

We are excited to be celebrating Literacy Week at school next week.

We start off the week with our kick off assembly/buddy activity in the gym on Tuesday morning.  Wednesday afternoon we will have guest readers visiting our classrooms and we will also be doing our read-a-thon that afternoon.   Friday we will have our usual class Family Reading time in the morning but we also have a jammed packed day that includes an Author visit and our final Literacy Week assembly.   A reminder that we are encouraging everyone to dress up on Friday Feb 1st as their favourite book character.

Read-a-thon pledge forms were sent home last week from Ms. Solomon and need to be returned by Friday Feb 1st.  Please return all pledge forms even if no money has been raised.

We look forward to hearing about everyone’s favourite stories and seeing all the great character costumes.
