As we all know there was a celebration called Cinco De Mio this celebration was celebrated on Tuesday may 5th. Cinco de Mio stands for 5th of May. This celebration started because in the war between the Mexicans, and the French the Mexicans won over the French. most people believe that Cinco De Mio is a Mexican holiday, but NOPE its not. And because people believe this they don’t know this story on how this celebration was actually started. Now as I told you most people believe that this holiday is Mexico’s independence day. Now the actual date for Mexico’s Independence day is September, Wednesday the 16th. It is held on this date because that was the date of the Mexican’s victory against the French, it was May fifth 1862, with the leadership of General Ignacio Zaragoza. Some ways you can celebrate Cinco De Mio is by dancing, wearing a festive dress, parades, food, and having lots of fun. And in the celebration people could be talking about the war, and how they did it, and they say that to keep the celebration going for years, and years from now on. Now on to some words. Patriotism means loyalty, or a close attachment to someone or something. that is a big word described in easier words. A person could have great patriotism to a toy, and does not want to trow it away. And you might be sitting their wondering how did the Mexican army defete the French army well. Mexico did not exactly defeat the other army, Mexico got the French army to retreat from the war, I don’t exactly know how they did all that. Even if they were outnumbered. But they got that out of the way , and started partying! it was a great victory for them. In my opinion I think the Mexicans did good in that war. BY: Alan J.

    1. Cinco de Mayo means: The Fifth of May.

    2. I believe that some people from Mexico into America and started celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the 1860’s.

    3. Mexico’s Independence Day is on September the 16th, but many people mistake it with Cinco de Mayo.

    4. The holiday was chosen on May the 5th because it celebrates when Mexico was victorious against France in the war, in Puebla

    5. You can celebrate Cinco de Mayo by going to parades, dancing in parades, I read some more articles and they say you can make recreations of the history.

    6. For this question, I could only see 4 lines of words, so I searched up the definition, and patriotism basically means to support your country or a different country. “You could see them over there, but you can’t see their patriotism.”

    7. I think that the Mexican army could had won in such a small army because they could know the routes, they could have been planning, or they would have driven their enemies away and cornered them.

    8. a. I never knew that Napoleon III was part of this war.

    b. I never knew that there was this war and holiday. So, I learned a lot. Like the holiday is celebrated in mainly other country’s than Mexico. Most holidays are celebrated in the country or place where it first started.

    c. Many people think that Cinco de Mayo is Mexico’s Independence Day.

    d. The Europeans invaded Mexico because they had no money after the War of Reform.

    e. The Europeans were one of the world’s best armies, and they lost against Mexico.

    I. After France was defeated the first time, they retreated, but they came back with a bigger and stronger army, but again, they were defeated.

    j. Some places that celebrate Cinco de Mayo, they don’t celebrate for that reason, they just celebrate like/as if they were taking advantage.

In my own words, I would say Cinco de Mayo is a Celebration that has History behind it, as most holidays have. Cinco de Mayo started when France invaded Mexico and were in large groups against Mexico’s army, and the French army was also one of the world’s best armies at that time. Mexico and France fought, but then, surprisingly, Mexico won the war because of the French army retreating, but then the French came back with a much bigger, and stronger army. The same process happened, France fought against Mexico with a much better army, but lost. That was the last time. From Then and on, the war was celebrated because of the Mexicans win. And that’s how Cinco de Mayo started.

  5. ella34 says:

From these sites and videos, I have learned a lot about Cinco de Mayo! I myself don’t celebrate Cinco de Mayo, but now I know how others do. Cinco de Mayo means the “fifth of May” which is why it is celebrated on that day. Cinco de Mayo started when a group of California State University students decided that the Mexicans should have a holiday of their own because of their victory against the French army. Cinco de Mayo is all about the history, and it all started in 1862, when the French invaded Mexico, and they were the best, largest and most experienced army until they arrived at the town of Pueblo. General Ignacio Zaragoza managed to send the French soldiers evacuating quickly into full retreat. The Mexicans had an army of only 4,500 people, while the French army had 6,500. It was the Mexicans’ courage and determination that led them to their victory, as they were just shopkeepers and they did not have much experience. They accomplished their victory on May 5th, which is why Cinco de Mayo is celebrated on May 5th. Now that the history is known, how is Cinco de Mayo celebrated? In Mexico, this day isn’t nearly as big as Mexican Independence Day, which is celebrated on September 16th, but they do celebrate it. In Mexico, there is a parade where people dress up as French and Mexican soldiers to reenact the Mexicans’ victory over the French soldiers. Everyone dresses up , and dances. The town of Puebla is where most of these celebrations take place. But is Cinco de Mayo only celebrated in Mexico? No! Of course it can be celebrated outside of Mexico! For example, in Canada. In Canada, there are more smaller celebrations. These celebrations usually involve the colors of the Mexican flag: Green, red and white, followed by mariachi bands. Mariachi music is traditional Mexican folk music. The United States also celebrates Cinco de Mayo, but they don’t get all that much into the history but they still have festivals and parades. All in all, I learned a whole lot about Mexican culture and how people celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

  6. althea2 says:

Cinco de Mayo is a holiday celebrated by Americans and Mexicans. Families have large cookouts and dinners serving burritos, enchiladas and empanadas, amazing Mexican food you must try. People often think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day but are mistaken. I would be laughing my head off if people are prancing around on the street shouting, “Happy Mexican Independence Day!” Mexican Independence Day is on September 16, ten days after my own birthday!
The first thing I learned that in 1967, a group of students realized that there were no Chicano holidays and decided to “invent” a new holiday for the Chicano to celebrate their history.
Second, the students chose May 5 for a specific reason: in 1862 the Mexicans exposed their extraordinary courage in the Battle of Puebla.
Third, during the battle of Puebla 4,500 Mexican soldiers defeated the French army of 6,500 soldiers at Puebla, Mexico.
Fourth, the soldiers that defeated the French army were not really trained professionals and were commoners like shopkeepers and farmers.
Fifth, the Battle of Puebla became a symbol of Mexican patriotism.
Sixth, there are many parades and festivals to celebrate Cinco de Mayo and Mexican heritage.
Seventh, I learned that children are blindfolded and hit piñatas and candy falls out. This is what my friend did at her fifth birthday party.
Eighth, Mariachi music can be heard throughout the town and the citizens dance to the music.

    2. A group of students introduced the festivity to the U.S.
    3. Mexico’s Independence Day is on September 16th.
    4. May the fifth was chosen for Cinco de Mayo because in 1862 the Mexicans defeated the French army.
    5. Two ways that you can celebrate Cinco de Mayo is by joining in on the festivities and joining family cookouts.
    6. Patriotism means to be very protective and supportive of someone’s country. “The man showed great patriotism to his country.
    7. I think the Mexicans were able to defeat the French army because they had courage and fierce determination that gave them the power to fight on.

    7. Cinco de Mayo takes place in Canada, Jamaica, Australia, New Zealand and even France, surprisingly.
    8. When the children/adults dance, the girls do much more work because they are swishing their skirts around.
    9. In 1940, Cinco de Mayo became popular in the U.S. with a large Mexican population such as Los Angeles and Houston.
    10. Students in Mexico do not have school on Cinco de Mayo.

In your own words what is Cinco De Mayo? Cinco De mayo is a celebration celebrated on Cinco De mayo (fifth of may). also called Anniversary of the Battle of Puebla. It is celebrated in parts of the United States to honour the victory in 1862 that the military had over the French forces. Cinco De mayo is mostly celebrated by Mexican Americans. On May 5th 1862, is the day when the military won a battle against the French forces at Puebla, so that is why they celebrate it. Cinco De mayo is a big thing in Mexican history because their soldiers shows so much courage because the French forces had 2000 more soldiers than the military. But since the military showed lots of courage, they beat the French forces. They celebrate it to honour the soldiers that showed the most amount of courage they have ever heard about. In 1967, a group of students studying at California State University realized there were not any Mexican holidays, so they organized the first Cinco de Mayo celebration and it is now celebrated across the country.

    When is Mexico’s Independence Day?

Mexican Independence Day is on September 16th and some people had confusion between if Cinco de Mayo and The Independence Day of Mexico were the same things.

Why was the 5th of May chosen for Cinco de Mayo?

They chose this date because the Mexican showed a significant amount of bravery when fighting against the French even though they were outnumbered. The war took place in the year 1862.

What are two ways that people can celebrate Cinco de Mayo?

People celebrate Cinco de Mayo by acknowledging their win against the French in The Battle of Puebla and just for their freedom and strength.

His patriotism towards his country fascinated me.

    Interesting and newly learned points:

I learned about the battle of Puebla and how Mexico defended Puebla and sent the French back and how they were able to stand against one of the strongest armies in the world and even though they were poorly equipped and had no experience they were able to win.

Another fascinating fact I wonder about is how Mexico has fewer people celebrating Cinco de Mayo than the U.S.A even though it is a Mexican holiday! It seems as even though it was an amazing time in their history they barely even seem to care. I also see this as a more American celebration since it was created in the U.S.A even though it was based on Mexican history.

I also learned about how France started being a jerk and taking control of Mexico’s capital Mexico City and U.S.A came in and scared France away and Maximilian who was the emperor of the 2nd Mexican empire was executed and Benito Juarez who was the original president of Mexico got back to power.

I also learnt on how people get the Mexican Independence Day and Cinco de Mayo mixed up and think that they are the same thing even though they are only similar in where they are based off.

I learned about how The French underestimated the Mexican and thought they could easily get them to surrender without doing anything but since they got so cocky, they ended up losing.

Another thing I learned is how Mexico had lots of war debt they had to pay to the British, Spanish and French and how the French had bigger plans and hid those plans from the British and Spanish which made it so that along with having to pay the debts, they had to get ready to defend against one of the strongest armies.

I learned about how Napoleon Bonaparte died on the same day Cinco de Mayo is celebrated now, May 5th, and that also means that we celebrate Cinco de Mayo during his death anniversary.

The states that celebrate Cinco de Mayo the most are Arizona, Texas, California, and New Mexico and those states celebrate more thrillingly then Mexico itself.

The reason some states in the U.S.A celebrate Cinco de Mayo more than other states is because those states used to be part of Mexico until the war between the two countries, so those states have a long background with Mexico.

Cinco de Mayo was confined in California until the 1980s and then was spread around U.S.A and since then it has been celebrated quite a lot across the U.S.A.

    5. I learned that it is celebrated on May 5th.

    6. I learned that the holiday evolved from a battle.( not many holidays are)

    7. I learned that Cinco De Mayo means “Fifth of May” in Spanish.

    8. I learned that There are drinks and parades in the celebration.

    9. I learned that this started in 1861.

    10. I learned that the battle of Puebla lasted from daybreak to early evening.

  13. noorai1 says:

    Cinco de Mayo

1: Cinco de Mayo in Spanish for Fifth of May

2: President Franklin Roosevelt started the holiday Cinco de Mayo in the United States.

    3: Mexico’s Independence Day is on September 16, 1810.

4: It’s on May 5 because of the Mexican Army ‘s victory over the French Empire at the Battle of Puebla, on May 5, 1862.

5: Decorating your home and cooking traditional Mexican food.

6: It means to be dedicated to a country.

7: I think it’s because they had faith in themselves. In their head they may have thought, if they beat other cities…then it won’t happen to us! They probably also had smart strategies.

    8: Ten new facts.

1: The Puebla battle lasted from daybreak to early evening.

2: The French lost nearly 500 soldiers in the battle.

3: The Mexicans only lost around 100 soldiers throughout.

4: Cinco de mayo is not celebrated as much in Mexico, except in the town where the clash happened, Puebla.

5: Cinco de Mayo is celebrated more outside of Mexico then Mexico itself.

6: Swiftly around 6,000 soldiers were going to attack Puebla.

7: In the celebrations, people reenact the clash (not actual fighting though.)

8: Cinco de mayo is not actually a big celebration in Mexico.

9: Cinco de Mayo is NOT Mexico’s Independence Day.

10: Banks, stores and any other place are still open for this holiday.

Cinco de Mayo is one of those celebrations that you will remember. I know it’s not as big has Mexico’s Independence Day, but it does have an impact to those who celebrate it. I think that Cinco de Mayo reminds us that nothing is impossible. In the clash, there were 6,000 French soldiers, and only 2,000 Mexican soldiers. But more French soldiers died then Mexican. And the French ended up retreating. So, there was most likely faith that the Mexicans had because the French were better trained and armed. So, I believe that this day means to have faith, and to think before you act. Well, I mean for like deeper meanings xD. The foods are of course, DELICIOUS but spicy! XD. I don’t think my stepdad (who is Mexican) Celebrates Cinco de Mayo. Because he did not do anything special on that day. Overall I really like this holiday ( ish) because it’s also more than parades, it has a past, just like all of us x3. I would love to learn more about this topic! ^^

  14. leo40 says:

In my own words, Cinco De Mayo is a traditional Mexican holiday that celebrates the amazing victory of the Mexican army over the French army on May fifth, 1862. The French army was ruled by Napolean III at that time, and the President of Mexico was Benito Juárez. I think the Mexicans really deserve this celebration. I mean, the Mexicans had 4500 troops, while the French had 6500 troops. The French were also better trained and were more prepared, but that was the reason that they lost that battle. They were overconfident. So when they came face to face with the Mexicans, they attacked carelessly, while the Mexicans were completely focused on the war. They attacked fiercely, without mercy, and the hard work paid off.
    10 points that I learned:
1:Cinco De Mayo is a Mexican holiday.
2:It celebrates the victory of the Mexican army at the Battle of Puebla.
3:The Mexicans had 4500 troops, while the French had 6500 troops.
4:The war lasted from sunrise to sunset.
5:Cinco De Mayo means ‘fifth of May’ in Spanish.
6:Lots of people mistake this holiday as the Mexican independence day.
7:In 1967, a group of students in California brought this holiday to the US. This holiday was originally celebrated just in Mexico
8: The Mexican Independence Day is on Wednesday, September 16.
9:after the battle, about 500 French soldiers died, while less than 100 Mexican soldiers died.
10: The battle was named ‘battle of Puebla’

    Cinco de Mayo Questions
    1. What does ‘Cinco de Mayo’ mean?

It means ‘fifth of May’ in Spanish.

    2. Who started the holiday Cinco de Mayo in the United States?

A group of students in California in 1967 started Cinco De Mayo in the US.

    3. When is Mexico’s Independence Day?

Mexico’s Independence Day is on Wednesday,
    September 16.
    4. Why was the 5th of May chosen for Cinco de Mayo?
On May 5, 1862, Mexico won a battle against France at the Battle of Puebla during the Franco-Mexican War.
    5. What are two ways that people can celebrate Cinco de Mayo?
1.there are Mexican folk dances that you could do.

    2. Eat traditional Mexican foods like tacos and join cookouts. (although tacos are not the only type of yummy Mexican foods, they’re still good).

    6. According to the fourth paragraph, what does the word patriotism mean? Use this word in a sentence.

Patriotism means like your feeling and/or your spirit to your home or country. “Patriotism is very strong in this country”

    7. Why do you think that the small Mexican army was able to win the battle against a larger, well-trained army?

The Mexicans did have a smaller army, but I clearly remember in gym class that Ms. Panesar said that it didn’t matter if you had a big or small army. As long as you have the right strategy, you can win anything. The Mexicans also had the determination to win, so in that battle, the Mexicans were showing no mercy against the French army.

  15. tiana3 says:

“Cinco De Mayo” means the fifth of May which is the day this occasion is celebrated on. A group of students at California State University realized that there were no Chicano (U.S. residents with Mexican heritage) holidays and felt that Chicano’s should celebrate their history and culture in America, so they organized an event for them and soon became a large celebration/holiday throughout America. Mexican Independence Day is celebrated on September 16th. The 5th of May was chosen for Cinco De Mayo because on that day of 1862, Mexicans showed a lot of courage during The Battle of Puebla. In the battle, 4,500 soldiers defeated the French army of 6,500 soldiers at Puebla, Mexico. Overall, the soldiers of Mexico weren’t really trained but they were just common people. The battle became a symbol of Mexican patriotism. Sentence: The people of Mexico showed undoubtfully, a large amount of patriotism before, during and after The Battle of Puebla. I think that Mexico’s small army was able to defeat the bigger, well-trained army because they were willingly to save their country and they were determined to do so. For example, it is kind of like the Tortoise and the Hare, because France thought they could do better due to their large number of well-trained soldiers like the Hare thought that it could win, but the determined tortoise fought hard and made it to the finish line first, like Mexico who was also determined, fought hard and won. I believe that it is that Mexico believed that they could fight through this and were determined to do their best FOR THEIR COUNTRY, not themselves. For example, slow, steady, and determined wins the race!
    Interesting and newly learned points:
One thing I learned, is that the French invaded the young country of Mexico, but when they came to the town, Puebla, a Mexican force, in command of General Ignacio Zaragoza, held off and sent them to retreat. But they came back with a bigger army, which led the Mexicans to fight with a though smaller number of soldiers who were just common people and not specifically well-trained, and surprisingly won on May 5th. Another thing I learned, is that when the French finally retreated, the French had nearly 500 soldiers killed and Mexico, surprisingly had about 100 Mexicans killed compared to France. Then in 1867, after the end of the civil war, France withdrew. Third next fact that I learned, is that apparently, the holiday most gets confused with Cinco De Mayo, which is Mexican Independence Day, was declared 50 years before the Battle of Puebla. Mexico’s Independence Day is on September 16th and is the anniversary of a revolutionary priest called Miguero Hidalgo y Costilla who is famous for the “Cry of Dolores” which is named after the city of Dolores Hidalgo, Mexico, a call to declare a war against Spain in 1810. The fourth fact I learned is that Cinco De Mayo means the fifth of May, which is the day the holiday is on. The fifth thing I learned is that a group of students thought that Mexican heritage should be celebrated in America on specifically May the fifth because in 1862, that day, Mexicans showed their bravery in the Battle of Puebla against the French army. How did Cinco de Mayo start? Well, a group of university students noticed that there was no Chicano holiday, so they decided to start a new holiday for other people outside of Mexico.
