Islam uses the Lunar calendar which is based on the phases of the moon. Ramadan is the name of the 9th month of the Islamic calendar. Ramadan lasts a month. Muslims can’t eat between dawn and dusk. And Muslims can’t drink water or beverages at that time either. They can’t watch tv, can’t play video games, can’t argue, and they can’t eat burgers. These are things I do in my life regularly. It’s not everything I do, but a lot of it is. Ramadan lasts a month exactly.
During the month Muslims focus on not eating, and drinking. They are allowed to give things to charity, and help poor people, and give gifts to family. It’s like a mash-up of Christmas and Thanksgiving celebrations. The end of Ramadan is called Eid. People celebrate by saying prayers, visiting family and eating a giant feast. Muslims give gifts to family and friends and wear new clothes.
I would not be able to fast without food or water. I need to eat every 2 hours. The longest I didn’t eat was 7 hours and 30 minutes. That was when I went to the dentist. I don’t want to say much more about that day. It was a horrible day. I can give up tv and video games for a month if I had to. I would not want to, but I could do it. The giant feast at the end sounds good. I dislike dates, so definitely not eat them.

What calendar is used in Islam???
The calendar that they use is called the Islamic calendar.

    What is Ramadan???
Ramadan is a month of fasting for Muslims. They eat and drink a lot early in the morning and late in the night because during the day from dawn to dusk, they are not allowed to eat nor drink because they are fasting. So they consume lots of food early and late every day from April 23 to May 23 which is 30 days. It is also a time where they have to honour the Muslim scripture or Holy Book, called the Quran.

Do you think you would be able to fast from food and water???
No, I don’t think I can make it 30 days without eating and drinking because I like to eat a lot now that we are in quarantine. I also wanna drink lots too because I get thirsty by just playing Fortnite.

What did you learn that was interesting???
Well I already knew about it because one of my close friends Mohamed, celebrates it and he has taught me loads of things about Ramadan, but not everything. Things I learned was that it is from April 23 to May 23, (I thought it was from May 9 to June 9) and the dates change every year depending on their calendar. I also Learned that Ramadan requires a specific calendar called the Islamic calendar. Also I did not know that it was about not using tobacco and not to do sinful things. Now I know that they must pray to the Quran during Ramadan. I also learned that they need to eat and drink lots of healthy foods and drinks before sunrise and after sunset to last them through the day. I also needed to know that Ramadan is not just for fasting. It’s about self improvement and learning to not waste food and to be grateful for everything we have in our lives. Muslims celebrate Ramadan all over the world.

In some Muslim nations, if you do not fast, you could be sent to jail and could be sentenced.

  4. labib1 says:

What calendar is used in Islam?

The Islamic calendar also called the Hijri calendar is a lunar calendar and since a day in the lunar calendar is 11 days slower than a solar calendar so that is why Ramadan doesn’t start at the start of a solar calendar. This year Ramadan started on a Friday which is a holy day for Muslims.

    What is Ramadan?

Ramadan is the 9th month in the Islamic calendar and is the month when the first Quran verse was sent and the exact day of when it was revealed is not known but it is called Laylatul Qadr which translates to the night of decree and Muslim scholars say that Laylatul Qadr is on one of the last 10 days of Ramadan and is most likely on an odd date. The Quran was revealed verse by verse from Allah(t) to Muhammed (saws) and the year it was revealed was 610.

What do Muslims refer to rain from during the month of Ramadan?

Muslims refer to it as a sign because it cools the ground and it is a lot harder to fast in the heat and Ramadan is as holy as rain pouring during the summertime and rain is Allah(t) mercy pouring onto Earth relieving people from the heats of most Islamic countries.

    How long does Ramadan last?

Ramadan lasts for a month like for this year (not really year because it is less than a year because the lunar calendar is 11 days shorter per month) it started from April 23rd to May 23rd and in the actual Islamic calendar it is one the 9th month and the month is officially called Ramadan. The 12 months of Ramadan are Muharram, Saffar, Rabiul-Awwal, Rabi-Uthani, Jumadi-ul-awwal, Jumadi-Uthani, Rajab, Sha’ban, Ramadan, Shawwal, Zhul-Q’ada, and Zhul-Hijja. Before when Muslims couldn’t see the moon, they would just keep on fasting every day for 30 days and if the moon comes up in that period, they follow that. The first day of Ramadan is called the hijr and it symbolizes when the crescent moon comes out. If you have noticed, in a lot of mosques they have the crescent moon on them.

What do Muslims focus on during Ramadan? What do they fast?

During Ramadan Muslims always focus on religion and praising Allah(t) and reading the Quran. Muslims are supposed to read the entire Quran during Ramadan and if you can’t do it is okay because you could attend a tharabee namaz. (prayer) This prayer is a huge one that takes place at a mosque or at someone’s house and is led by someone who has memorized the entire holy Quran which is exactly 157935 Arabic words! The namaz is in total 20 units and you finish an entire chapter every day which is going to lead to finishing all 30 chapters by the end of Ramadan. Muslims fast for mainly two reasons, first, Muslims fast for Allah(t) to so that they really are sacrificing themselves to Allah(t) and secondly because it shows them how it feels to be poor and not have food like the families in Africa so that they will be more generous now that they know how it feels. Muslims don’t eat or drink anything from sunrise till sunset, the meal Muslims eat before is called Suhoor but sometimes we call it Sehri. The sunset meal is called iftar and at my house it usually is piaghus, fish and vegetable pakora, chicken wrapped around with puff pastry, fries, burgers, barbecue chicken, fried rice, and much more.

What do Muslims do to commemorate the ending of the special month of Ramadan?

Eid al- Fitr is what Muslims look forward to celebrating at the end of Ramadan which is a celebration where all you do is eat and enjoy, normally if we were allowed to go outside you would go to all of our friends’ houses one by one and each house would have an entire feast for people and everyone digs in, it is like after never eating you come to food paradise and get to enjoy it with everyone you love. You are prohibited from fasting during Eid because it is the day you receive your reward.

Do you think you would be able to fast from sunrise to sunset?

I am Muslim so I’m able to do it for the entire month without stopping in between and it is because of how much I have fate in Allah(t) and how much I’m willing to sacrifice for Allah(t).

What did you find interesting about Ramadan?

What I found interesting about Ramadan is everything from the fasting and the religion and especially Eid al Fitr and how much food and drinks are given. I actually get the chance to experience this and get together with my friends and family.

    9. Reflection:

Since I am Muslim, I learned a lot of this as a child but fasting teaches you lots of things. One of the several things I learned from fasting is patience, without patience you could never fast because the whole point is to feel like the poor people that have no food and without patience you will end up breaking your fast. Another thing it thought me is empathy because while fasting I get to completely feel how poor and hungry people feel how those people feel during their life. I also know that you learn how to focus during Ramadan because you don’t bother eating or drinking food so you can focus on reading the Quran and your prayers. Along with fasting comes the beauty of how much people fast and listen to Allah(t) commands. I think it had gone a little too far when people got a beating if they didn’t fast, but I guess if you are in Saudi Arabia, your most likely a Muslim and should be fasting since it’s your duty. I also learned that the first day of Ramadan is called Hijr and it is also a chapter in the Quran called surah Hijr. Another thing I about Ramadan is Eid which is when everyone starts feasting and stops fasting. Eid is supposed to be an enjoyable festivity where you go to your friends and relatives’ houses to eat and have fun but of course you need to pray at the mosque first. Ramadan in the end is mainly to see if we sacrifice ourselves to Allah(t) and to see if you obey. I will miss the fact that I must wait 10 months until I get to fast again, and we all get to sit and eat our iftar but once it comes around, I will be ready. Another thing fascinating about Ramadan is how we break our fast with a glass of water and a date because a date is sweet and healthy and is how prophet Muhammed (SAWS) broke his fast. I think Ramadan is special to Muslims because it is one of the only holidays we celebrate, and it is such a long and enjoyable festivity. RAMADAN MUBARAK!

  5. ella34 says:

I think have learned a whole lot about Ramadan, which to be honest, I didn’t know to much about before. First of all, I learned that there are more than 1.5 billion Muslims i the word (and probably way more because that was 10 years ago. There are approximately 50 significant Muslim countries out of 195 countries. Another new fact that I learned was that there are various types of Islamic veils, and which one you wear depends on which country you come from. Some of the types are the burqa, the niqab, the hijab, and the chador. The niqab is a veil that Pashtuns from Afghanistan wear, and it conceals your head along with your body, and your eyes. The niqab is a veil that completely covers you, and only leaves a small slit for the eyes to see through. The niqab is used in Wahabi Islam. The hijab, unlike the other veils, is a headscarf, and not a veil. It covers your neck, ears, and hair, but your face remains visible. The hijab is used by various Muslims. The chador is a cloak that leaves your face uncovered, but hides your body and hair and is left open at the front. The chador is worn by Afghanistan and Iran women, but it is not mandatory to wear one. There are also many different turbans that men wear, but it depends on where you’re from. Some of the men that where these turbans are Sikh men, Iranian leaders, Indian men, Taliban members, ad Muslim religious elders. Now that we know some of the head garments that are worn by Muslims, let’s move on to Ramadan! What is Ramadan, you ask? Well, in the Islamic calendar, the name of the 9th month is Ramadan. You can know when it is the 9th month when you can spot the new moon. It is mentioned that Allah, ot God, handed the first chapters of the Quran (the Islamic Holy Book) to the prophet Muhammad in 610. So that’s all there is to Ramadan, right? Nuh-uh-uh! Not so fast! There are 5 pillars of Islam. First, there is Shahada, which is faith. You must announce that you are a Muslim, and only believe in Allah and that Muhammad is God’s messenger. The second pillar is Salah, which is a prayer. You sit in a specific bowing position and must wash yourself before prayers. The third pillar is Zakat, which is charity. If you are financially stable, you must take part in giving to the poor. The fourth pillar is Sawm, which is fasting. Muslims are forbidden to eat/drink from dusk to dawn during Ramadan. This is only if you are old enough, at about the age of 12, but maybe different for some people. This is to ask for forgiveness from God after committing sins, and showing their appreciation to God. The last pillar is Hajj, which is Pilgrimage to Mecca. This must be done once in a healthy Muslim’s lifetime, and is when you put on 2 white sheets. Some rituals incorporate walking several times around the Kaaba and touching the Black Stone. Both women and men must participate. Something else that I learned about Ramadan is that you are not allowed to fight, eat or drink, lower your gaze, smoke, waste time on video games or other non useful activities, or cuss, lie, or backbite. Some of the things that you must do are pray 5 daily Salaahs on time, study/learn Islamic knowledge, learn and recite the Holy Qur’aan, do plenty of Dhikr, make plenty of Duaa, and give charity and help the poor. A lot of things that need to be done and not done, right? Yeah, it sure is! Now, let’s move on to the last bit of information about Ramadan. Well, the moon phases take 29 and a half days to finish and the Islamic calendar follows the moon phases, so the day that Ramadan is celebrated moves backwards about 11 days every year. This very year, Ramadan began on Sunday, May 4th, and will end on Tuesday, June 4th. So how does Ramadan end? Eid al-fitr signals the end of Ramadan, and it starts by praying the Farz Namaz at the Mosque. There is also feasting, gathering with families, wearing brand new clothes, shopping, giving gifts, and eating many traditional sweets. Basically, during Ramadan, Muslims focus on praying more, increased self-discipline, self-control, empathy for others, and consists of a large feast after fasting, with sweets such as baklava, knafeh, dates, luqaimat, and more. Now I bet you’re thinking, “Wow! That’s a lot of things that Ramadan consists of!” Well yeah, it sure is! Which is why I am quite sure that I would be able to get through fasting from food and water, but just barely. Overall, I learned a lot about Ramadan, along with Islamic religion.

Do you think you would be able to fast from food and water?
Obviously, no. I could not do something like that. I call that being skilled as heck. Before, in Ms. West’s class, I kept on offering him food by accident and constantly saying sorry over and over. If I probably tried fasting for at least one day, I would probably be ready to eat almost anything in front of me.
What did you learn that was interesting?
I learned that in the end of Ramadan is kinnda like a new year sort of thing. And maybe Christmas but I do not celebrate that. This seems like a cool religion on my opinion. And I find the fasting also supper cool. But I think it is probably because I have no skill in fasting. And even if I did, I find this supper cool how they fast for a month and at the end they get to feast. It is like when you wait in a restaurant and just wait for the food. But you must wait for a month for the food (that made a lot more sense in my head).

Eid means the end of Ramadan. First, you go to the mosque and pray the Farz Namaz. Then comes family gatherings, but… ya. Covid-19. But then you can eat traditional sweet dishes, wear new clothes, feasting, shopping and gift giving which should both go together.

Do I think I can fast from food and water? I guess I could, I’m fine with drinking water only. But eating’s different to me. I can eat some foods, like traditional sweets, but pigs… do I like eating ham, bacon, etc? I’m fine without eating it. It’s not a daily meal. I haven’t had bacon in like… A LONG TIME, and I don’t remember the last time I ate pork. So, I’m fine. I found lots of things that are new to me in Ramadan, I thought Ramadan at first was just a celebration, but it’s a name of a month, a LONG celebration, and fasting was a lot to it! When I first learnt the basics of Ramadan, I thought there must have been more to it. And there was. Ramadan has a history long ago, and you could do your daily prayers… anywhere! The airport, at school, etc. The most interesting part of Ramadan to me is when it starts. It starts at the sighting of a new moon! And the date shifts around 11 days each year! I learnt so much about Ramadan. So much new things and all about how it works.

That way, children/people will learn to focus on things that they need to do. My second favourite part is going shopping after Ramadan ends. Because personally, I love getting new clothes. So I’m sold. Lastly, another thing that I noticed is the different kinds of Turbans and Veils. Before this amazing power point, I thought all Turbans and Veils were identical. And to be honest, I thought that there was only one type of calendar. But there is another type. And in the celebration, it’s like peace because there is no fighting or smoking or anything like that. So, then you don’t have to worry about any crime or anything like that. And I think it is fun to eat a lot at the end of the day with all your family. 8. One thing I learned that was interesting was that during Ramadan fasting is mandatory except for pregnant women, sick people, young children, and old people.
    Reflection:
I think that Ramadan is a very interesting Islamic holiday. Especially with the fasting and the feasting and whatnot, I think this holiday really has a reason to be celebrated. I can’t stand not eating for a whole thirty days, so this holiday is very strange, but then again, honouring and donating money to poor people and reflecting on your self-discipline doesn’t sound bad, in fact, I could use some of that too. The most exciting part is the gift-giving part. I’m pretty sure that all kids like getting gifts, but that’s not the most important part of the celebration. Ramadan is a celebration for spiritual reflection, self-improvement, and heightened devotion and worship. Muslims believe that Ramadan teaches them to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy for those who are less fortunate or poor, thus encouraging actions of generosity and donating to charity. if the entire world had this celebration, I think that this planet would be a completely better place. because right now, people don’t even care about the poor people on the streets. sure, there is a virus outside, but have people cared for them before? I don’t think so. the only people that I see helping the needy ones are organizations that actually help those people. Sure, some people might have helped them by giving them money, but does that really help? Again, I don’t think so. I’m not saying that people have to do this, not even I do it most of the time. I just think that this is a problem that has been going on for a long time and needs to be highlighted.

The Islamic calendar is also known as the Hijri calendar, and is followed by the cycles of the moon making Ramadan’s date move about 11 days back every year. Ramadan is the 9th month of the Muslim year/calendar, which starts at the beginning of the month that is determined by when there is a new moon. Ramadan is apparently the most sacred month throughout the Islamic culture and year. Muslims sees the month of Ramadan as the mark that Allah/God gave the first chapters of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad in 610. The Quran is the holy book of Islam’s. Muslims refrain from eating, and fast from sunrise until sunset, and once after fasting, they eat a feast which they must finish before dawn. It is called the sawm and is one of the Five Pillars of Islam that creates a Muslims life. They also refrain from bad/evil actions, thoughts or words. They also refrain from smoking and wasting their time. Ramadan lasts for a month which is about 29 or 30 days. There is no exact date of when it starts and ends, but it usually finishes at the end of the month or 29 or 30 days. This year, it started on May 4th, and ends on June 4th. The dates are predicted by the phases of the moon. Muslims mostly focus on praying and charity during the month and try their best to improve their self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy to those who are less fortunate. Muslims fast during Ramadan because I guess they believe that it is fair to everyone to share their feelings of hunger and the people who are less fortunate throughout the community. The last day of Ramadan, also known as Eid al-Fitr, starts off by going to the Mosque and praying the Farz Namaz that is particular to Eid. There are also a lot of family and social gatherings, eating traditional sweet dishes/foods, feasting, wearing new clothes, shopping, and giving gifts.
    REFLECTION
In my opinion, I think that fasting is a good lesson to learn how to be patient and grateful, but I don’t know if I can fast for 29 or 30 days. For me, I think that it’s possible to do, but would be difficult adjusting into doing so, since I am not used to that schedule as well. It was quite interesting to learn about Ramadan, because it was interesting to learn how Ramadan is like, and what it is all about. One of the facts that I learned, is that fasting is meant to ‘cleanse the soul from harmful impurities.’ Another fact that I learned is that Ramadan is the name of the ninth month of the Islamic calendar that they use. The start of the new month is determined by the sight of the new moon and, Ramadan is the most sacred month of the year in the Islamic calendar. The third fact that I learned is that you can’t eat/drink while fasting, you must lower your gaze, no fighting/arguing (avoiding sins), no smoking, no wasting time on useless activities, no swearing/lying/backbiting. Instead, you must pray all your 5 daily Salaah’s on time, study and learn Islamic knowledge, recite and learn the holy Qur’aan, do lots of Dhikr, make lots of Duaa, and give in charity and help the poor. The fourth thing I learned was that the Kaaba is a building at the center of Islam’s most important Mosque, Al-Masjid Al Haram which means The Sacred Mosque. Anywhere in the world, Muslims are supposed to be facing the Kaaba when they perform the Salah or an Islamic prayer. The fifth thing that I learned is that there are rules for fasting. They are to eat a meal before it becomes dawn, no food or drinks until dusk, do good deeds, give charity and help those in need, and practice patience and self-discipline. Another thing that I earned is that young children, the elderly, pregnant woman, and those who are sick or have a medical condition that makes fasting an issue or finds it too difficult are exempt. The seventh learned fact is that the people who miss fasting during Ramadan for valid temporary reasons, must fast after Ramadan to make up for the days that they missed. Another thing that I learned, is that the meal before fasting is called the suhur which is eaten before dawn. The meal at sunset, where the fast breaks, is called iftar. The ninth fact that I learned is that dates are usually the first food that breaks the fast/what they eat first, because according to the tradition, Muhammad ate 3 dates. The final fact that I learned about Ramadan, is that if you don’t follow the rules of fasting during Ramadan, then you can be sentenced for it if you get caught. The punishment is decided by the countries, but some may be very harsh. Overall, I learned that Ramadan teaches you how to practice self-discipline, self-control, sacrifice, and empathy/equality to those who are less fortunate and get better ate doing so. it sounds to me like a very religious tradition, and it is very interesting to learn about that.

8: What did you learn that was interesting?

I learned more about fasting, and what’s it’s about. I remember this time, where my dad brought me to his friend’s house for dinner, (they also had kids, that I remembered from a religious party thing, we were chill, also there father had only one arm T^T). And I was chillen in the kids’ room, when their mother came in and asked, “Do you fast?” because it was the month of Ramadan. Before I did not know it was called fasting (dumb me) And I didn’t understand and then I said yes XD. Kind of a random story, that’s when I learned that was what it was called xD. I don’t know if my dad does fasting, Also I love the food TwT. I liked the meaning of it, it’s all about caring for others, and respecting the people around you, no madder what’s their situation. Lots of things in the Ramadan month is kind of like my life. Well food and word like XD. Like Mubarak, in the language I speak that means Thanks (thank you). And there’s a dessert called Baklava, which I LOVE. Its great TwT.

Ramadan is a very nice tradition, but I wouldn’t even last a day for the fasting water is my life and it would be hard. The tradition was really thought out but it takes 29.5 days for the event and it alternate the calendar by 11 days which I don’t think is necessary, but this is all my own reaction so its about what I think. Multiple things I like 1 of it is I like you can be any Muslim and celebrate it so you don’t need to be only Muslim. If you know what im saying because I certainly SUCK at explaining. some other stuff I want to say about is the 5 pillars. Its very unique because its 5 pillars not 5 pizzas or 5 towers but 5 pillars and that’s one thing I like 5 towers would sound wonky but, in my opinion, they nailed the name! The tradition is very holy as in every move is supposed to be forgiving their sins like fasting has the meaning to forgive and donating money is also pretty holy even what they supposed to do and not suppose like no arguing fighting etc. No swearing, lying back talking some things like that. No smoking or doing drugs. Don’t waste your time on useless stuff games, TV, phone. This is just really holy in there way and it probably can encourage some other culture to see it or try it cause of how it works other than the mecca. Sry if its not detailed I… just couldn’t think much but this is a really good event got to say.

    10. The start of Ramadan is decided by the sighting of the new moon.

I don’t think I would be able to fast for even 5 hours. I think it’s shocking how long Muslims can stay without food or water – I would’ve been thirsty or hungry by then. Giving money to the poor and needy while fasting is to recognize what pain they are going through. If I were to fast for a month, I would not be able to make it through as I would be out of energy.

I still did not see mine on so I just decided to repost it ^^
