Hi Families!

Here is the Weekly Learning Plan for this week. This week we are observing weather patterns and working on non-standard measurement – lots of fun exploring to be done!

Theme: Weather and Measurement

This logo before an activity means that I would like you to share a picture or video on Fresh Grade! (you are always welcome to share more)

Weather and Measure!

Science and Math and reading combined in this week’s learning plan.

You can do bits and pieces throughout the week at the pace that is best for your family.

What’s the Weather?

Recently the weather has been changing – from many days of rain to many days of sun! Watch this SciShow Kids episode about tracking the weather!

Science Journal

For each day this week, keep a weather journal! Look out your window or go for a neighbourhood walk and observe what kind of weather you see.

  • What clues tell you that it is windy, rainy, sunny, or cloudy?
  • On a blank piece of paper, draw a picture of what you see.
  • Try your best to s-t-r-e-t-c-h out your sounds and write a word to describe what you see.
  • If you can, try to make a prediction at the end of each day what you think the weather will be like tomorrow! Compare your predictions the next day to what you see.

What Happens Next?

Watch the Star Friends video on Fresh Grade. The video ends partway through the book; your job is to predict what happens next in the story! Draw a picture or two that shows what you imagine might happen next. Use some letters/words to help show your idea.

Read!

Check out Spring with Olga the Cloud on Epic! Make a journal entry about your favourite part of spring.

Count!

Go for a nature walk in your neighbourhood and gather a nature counting collection (a collection of 1-10 items). On a blank piece of paper, record and represent your collection including a drawing, numeral, number word, tally, and ten-frame.

Read and Tell a Story!

Check out Ferdinand the Story Catcher on Epic! Ask a family member to share stories with – choose a favourite story that you know well and practice telling it to them out loud. Have them tell a story to you aloud as well!

Draw!

After practicing telling your favourite story out loud, draw it! Split your page into three parts – show the beginning, middle, and end of the story you choose. Make sure your pictures include answers to our who, what, where questions.

Watch!

Check out The Sun Song on Epic! Can you draw a picture showing the 3 things that the sun does for us?

Measure!

Have you ever wondered how big something was? Read If the Shoe Fits on Epic!

Now let’s measure something in your home!

  • Find an item in your home to measure, like a book, a table, or a favourite stuffed animal.
  • Just like the mice in the book, choose a smaller item to measure it with! You can do this two different ways:
  1. If you have a single item (like a pencil, a toy car, a paperclip, or an apple), place the item on the edge of what you are trying to measure. Put your finger at the end of the item, then move it to continue measure its length.

Here is me measuring Sid with a marker! He is 4 marker lengths long.

  1. If you have many of the same sized item (like Lego, crayons, or blocks), line them up along the side of the item and see how many you need to measure it end to end. Make sure all of your measurement items are the same size!

Here is me measuring Sid with Playmobil! He is 6 Playmobil characters long.

Read!

Check out Ants Rule: The Long and Short of It on Epic! Draw a journal entry showing what you imagine a bug amusement park might be like!

Move!

Check out these fun movement activities! There is one for each school day this week.

Optional Challenges

If you find yourself wanting some extra tricky jobs, here are some extensions to add to this week’s activities!

Science Journal

If you have a printer at home, print out the Science Journal page from the class blog to help you keep track of the weather!

Count!

Do two different counting collections – once you have done them, compare your quantities. Ask yourself questions about how they are similar and different:

  • Where are they both in relation to 5? More or less?
  • Can you fit one inside the other? (ex: 3 and 7 – I can fit two of my 3 counting collections inside my 7 counting collection, and still need one more!)
  • When I split them up into different parts, can I have any overlapping quantities? (ex: 3 and 7 – I can split 3 up into 2 plus 1, and I can split 7 up into 2 plus 5)
  • What other connections can I make between the two quantities? How are they different?

Retell!

After reading Ferdinand the Story Catcher on Epic!, retell the story! Draw three pictures showing the beginning, middle, and end of the story.

Measure!

Choose a single measuring item in your home (like a block, a pencil, a toy car, or a book) and see how many things you can measure using that item, just like the ants used themselves to measure the different bugs! (ex: how many pencils long is your bed? Your table? Your shoe? Your brother?) Record your observations using a piece of paper and help from an adult.

Move!

Invent your own brain break movement activity! Record a video of you doing a dance, stretch, song, or other activity to get your body moving!
