Dear families:
Divisions 1’s Microsoft Office Team is now active and can be accessed to view homework, download files, and pose questions to the Team at any time. We have different channels for the various subjects, however Ms. Lanaway’s Math group has a separate Team. Please talk to your Math teacher to discuss how/if homework is being shared electronically.
Science and Social Studies will each have a channel within the Div. 1 Team. Ms. Macartney will be updating the Socials channel and I will be updating the Science channel. Homework will be posted in the channel and students are encouraged to ask questions by making posts within the channel. This is a space where they can support each other.
The homework page in Lanaway’s Lounge will not be used for updating homework.
Students are to write their homework into their planners – daily – and have 20 mins at the end of the school day to do this. Parents/Students can access Teams from home by signing into Office 365 (student sign-in) and going to the appropriate Team and channel to view recent posts.
Lanaway’s Lounge will continue to be used to post updates to families in a more general way. Blogfolios will continue to be used to share student learning and reflection. Please be sure to view your child’s blog periodically and give feedback when you can. If you have any questions regarding Teams, Lanaway’s Lounge, and Blogfolios, I’m happy to help.
*Remember: students have separate sign-ins for school computers, Office 365 (Outlook email and Teams), and Blogfolios. If you are having trouble signing in, please do not hesitate to ask. I have record of everyone’s passwords (except parents who have been encouraged to update their passwords for privacy).
Hi Friends!
Today was a very wet day in the forest. Students still enjoyed our forest time, however those who were not prepared for the weather suffered!
Parents: please know that students will always be reminded to write in their planners when we have planned a trip into the forest. Please check their planners daily to help remind them of homework and other responsibilities.
How should students dress for the weather?
- Rain coat/slicker or poncho. Many students come to school in a cotton hoodie or coat which is NOT resistant to rain. Only vinyl, rubber, or plastic is resistant. Cotton, polyester and other fabrics absorb water, making for a very cold trip outside when it is raining. Vinyl ponchos are cheap ($2) and easily purchased at the dollar store. If you think your child’s coat is not resistant to the rain, please consider buying one.
Rubber boots or hikers. Rubber boots are best, but hikers are definitely better than running shoes. Students’ feet got very wet today as they insisted on wearing running shoes. These are not appropriate for a wet forest full of puddles.
- Layers. Warm layers under the rain resistant coat is a necessity. A good warm middle layer is a puffy coat, fleece sweater/hoodie (not cotton) or wool sweater (my favourite!)
- Warm socks. These ideally are thick and wooly (or fuzzy). Thin cotton socks are a misery when wet!
- Bring EXTRA! I always bring an extra pair of socks and shoes to change into when I get back to class and boy, am I ever glad that I do! Some students bring their boots for the forest in a plastic grocery bag and then change back into their regular shoes when they’re back to class. This brings extra comfort to the rest of their day!
- Gloves. Now that we’re getting into winter, our visits to the forest are going to get a lot colder. Students should have a pair of gloves to keep their hands warm. Once wet, they’re not too warm. I save my gloves in a dry place until the walk home.
- Hat/Toque. I love a warm toque on a cold, rainy day! (Rain coat or poncho hood keeps it dry!)
With the weather getting more wet and cold, it’s a good idea to take stock of your outer wear and update. There are many affordable options. Please let me know if you have any questions. I am happy to help!
Instead of Forest Friday, we’ll be heading out to Central Park tomorrow – rain or shine!
Please dress for the weather – rain is expected. Rain boots, rain coat, glovies, even extra socks just in case!
We head out at 9:30 and will be back in time for lunch. Students will pack a recess snack and water.
Remember, whatever we pack in, we pack out, so be sure to have something to put your waste in.
We have a schedule! I’ve posted it to our homework board so you can view it from home. This does not include the details of the day or any of the many changes that can happen throughout the week, but subjects that are unlikely to change, such as Music, Band, P.E. and French, have been set in the schedule now.
Students who receive ELL and LSS support also have their schedules. This information can be found in the student’s planner.

Families – Please know that Math groups have begun. Your child has been assigned one of three Math teachers: Ms. Macartney, Ms. Apor or myself, Ms. Lanaway. If you have any concerns regarding your child and Math, please feel free to discuss this with me and/or your child’s Math teacher. We’re happy to help!
Students will be receiving 4x ~60min of Math a week on the following days: Mon, Wed, Thur, and Fri. We are still finalizing schedules. Once everything has been set, I will post this to the homework page. I am hoping that we can also populate the homework board regularly, so you should see Math homework posted on this page — coming soon!

All Division 1 students have now been entered into our blogfolio system and have access to posting on my blog. This is password protected, so only myself, the student, and one parent (more if you wish to add) have access to the blog.
An orange notice went home last week with your USERNAME and a temporary password (parent2000). If you have a password from past years, this will (should) still work!
**The temporary password will no longer work. If you are new, you will need to reset your own pw using FORGOT PW – Don’t forget to check your spam/junk folder for this auto generated email.
What do I need from you? Two things:
- Please respond to me to let me know you got notification of this new blog post (notification should have arrived in your email inbox).
- Please sign-in to your child’s blogfolio. Please let me know if you were able (or not) to get in!
