Beaver Lodges!

| Comments Off on Beaver Lodges!

We have been learning about structures.  There are many structures in nature created by animals.  This Spring Break, families may be able to notice the structures created by many birds in their natural habitats.  The Beaver is another builder that makes use of the trees of their habitat. Their lodges are noticeable in ponds and lakes right here in Burnaby.

Division 10 students decided to offer their services to the beavers. They role-played that they were architects for a building business and the beavers were their clients.  Check out their beaver lodge builds and their business comments.

Taj Sahaj Beaver Lodge Builders:  We started with a mud base and then added brown sticks and kept building upward.  Our challenge was making sure it wouldn’t fall.  We enjoyed sticking the sticks inside the mud and adding moss.   Taj and Sahaj

Nature’s Building Group: We started by making a really strong base in the shape of pentagon. We built 9 layers.  After we made an open space for the beavers to live, we added the roof. Our challenge  was keeping the sticks together with the mud.  We enjoyed throwing sticks around for the roof.  Maiia and Mashi

Tree-O Architects:  The three of us started with the ground.  We began with the shape of a triangle.  We added sticks to make the sides of the lodge.  We put mud to keep the sticks building up.  Our challenge was that it kept falling apart.  We worked together to make it stable.  Karina, Karen and Arya

Beaver Builders: We started with the bottom and then we began to build up.  We added some mud at the top.  We covered the mud with bark.  Our challenge was molding the mud so that the sticks would be strong on the side. We enjoyed building the lodge and we hope our clients are happy.  Kai and Parineet

Beaver Stick Business:  We started by making a square shape on the bottom. Then we filled the square in. We then tried to build the rest of it in a circle shape.  The challenge was trying to get the round shape.  We were happy that we never gave up.  We like our lodge.  Dayven and Hope

Muddy Lodge Building Company: The first thing we did was the mud surface.  Then we began to add the sticks while using more mud. We kept adding sticks so we wouldn’t have too many spaces and we would have a larger lodge.  Our challenge was keeping the mud sticky enough to hold the twigs.  We enjoyed adding the grass and nature layer.  Kyle and Linden

Graffiti Wall!

Recent neuroscience research shows that we are all in a “collective crisis” with our brain being challenged by 3 experiences: unpredictability, isolation, restraint/restriction! (Dr. Lori Desautels)  It is important that we continue to have conversations and opportunities to express our feelings.  It is important that we stay connected.

Students in Division 10 have had a chance to share how they feel about 3 areas of their lives.  They added to our graffiti walls with words that expressed how they feel about the Pandemic, School and Nature.

It is very powerful to see the students engage and experience connections at School during these unusual times.  It is also very important to recognize the affect Nature has on our brains and how enriching time in Nature can be in order to give calm and  peace to our mind and body.

As students reflected on their mind and body state, they were proud of the emotions they came up with for our Street Life Graffiti Walls.  It is clear, by their word choices, that School and Nature provide positive experiences for Div. 10.

Happy 100th Day of School!

| Comments Off on Happy 100th Day of School!

What a day of activities and celebrating for our 100th day of school 2020/2021!

We have also challenged ourselves to consider 100 ways to support the environment!

Some of our thoughts: Respect nature. Plant more trees. Reuse. Reduce. Recycle. Turn off tap when not using. Hand water your garden instead of using a sprinkler. Let your grass go brown in the summer. Watch for storm drain fish signs – pollution goes right to the creeks, rivers and oceans. Eat locally. Walk more. Buy local vegetables and fruit. Buy less. Ride your bike or scooter rather than taking a car. Carpool or take transit (Skytrain/bus). Shop vintage – buy used items (reusing). Donate clothing, toys, household items. Travel less or travel close to home. Hang up your laundry instead of using the dryer. Be mindful of camp fires and put out your flames. Be kind to animals (don’t feed wildlife and keep garbage cans closed/locked). Turn off the lights when not needed. Turn of electronics when not in use. Let nature inspire your thinking. Give nature a chance to grow and be free. Shrink your environmental footprint.

Student Led Conferences

| Comments Off on Student Led Conferences

Good Afternoon!

Due to the pandemic, our in-school Student Led Conferences had to be cancelled.  Today, students in Division 10 will be bringing their show and share package home for families to work through and discuss.  It is hoped that there will be much conversation about the Winter Arctic Adventures that students have experienced in Term 2.

One of their experiences took them up North to play some Inuit games.  One of the games was called Snow Snake. They had fun challenging themselves.

Below is the link to the power point inquiry presentation that will also be sent home via email to all Division 10 families.  Please take time to look at it with your child and then go through the package they are bringing home.

Have a wonderful weekend,

Mrs. E.

The snow fell and we went out for some Arctic fun.

We took our experience to the ice and have been excited about the Good Ol’ Hockey Game!  Click on the link below and open in a new tab to view our version of The Hockey Song!

We cheer for the Canucks and keep tally marks of their points.  I believe we could give them a few tips or two for a few more goals and wins.  Go Canucks Go!   Go Division 10 Go!

We have been working with 2D shapes and 3D solids.  We can name, identify and build with these shapes.  We have been on classroom, school and outdoor shape scavenger hunts.  We have experienced some hands-on opportunities working with playclay, marshmallows and toothpicks.

Have a look at our Shape City.

And what were we to do with our leftover marshmallows?  BUILD!  We continued our Arctic Adventures and worked together to build with the sticky cylinders.  We created icebergs and snow forts and snow homes.

We think this was better than making Rice Krispie Squares.

Laptop Time!  We are figuring out how to access our classroom blog by using the school laptops and inputting our usernames and passwords.  We have to be very focused when bringing the laptops to our classroom. We are learning about safe, responsible digital citizenship.  Learning how to use the shift key and where the exclamation mark has been quite an adventure.

We will continue to develop our technology skills and eventually work through the TEAMS platform.

Happy New Year!

Division 10 has started 2021 with calm, peaceful, inspirational goals.  The book, I Wish You More, by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, was shared by Ms. Hossack.  We have continued with that theme, opening our eyes, finding what touches our heart and makes us think more deeply.  The students have created 4 goals for Term 2 based on a goal for academics, one for calm, one for friendship and one for thinking.  They have put their goals onto a kite template with the thought of “I wish you more ups than downs!”

Their goals for calm have been inspired by some of the meaningful movements they have done during yoga time in the gym.  Click the link below to see their yoga stretches and poses.

One of the pieces of the poem, A Place Inside of Me, connected to our mindful moments.  It also supported our learning of Black Shirt Day commemorating the ongoing struggle for civil and human rights fought by Black and racialized Canadians.

We shared hope today with our first Black Shirt Day experience.  We will continue to be open to the possibilities! Thanks to Maiia for taking the photo.  Happy New Year!

Have a Snowriffic Holiday!

| Comments Off on Have a Snowriffic Holiday!

With Winter almost here, we wanted to wish you all a happy holiday.  We have had a snowriffic end to 2020 here in Room 15 and we look forward to a blizzard of learning in the New Year.  Best wishes from Division 10!
