Orange Shirt Day

Posted on September 29, 2023September 29, 2023

This week Division 11 has been talking about Orange Shirt Day. We have listened to the story When We Were Alone, read to us by the author David Robertson as part of a livestream, then we discussed the ideas of how people’s actions today are formed by their experiences in the past. For example in the story, Nokom (grandma) wears her hair long now because at residential school her hair was cut short. Students created Orange Hearts to display on the windows with messages or remembering, healing and hope.

In our Truth & Reconciliation Day Assembly we heard another story, With Our Orange Hearts by Phyllis Webstad and listened to this powerful song created by youth from a Kamloops school.

Please take some time to revisit and discuss the reason for Orange Shirt Day/ Truth and Reconciliation Day (September 30th) with your child.
