When our eggs arrived we predicted the hatch would occur on Jan 27th, 2022.
We were patient and observant and this afternoon around 2pm our first salmon eggs began to hatch!
There are currently 2 of 53 eggs that have hatched. One of them is adventurous and hopped out of the pie plate habitat we created. The other keeps burying his head under the larger rocks we have used to create a redd for the salmon. I did manage to catch a glimpse of the alevin as it moved to new location.
We learned in class today that the salmon use their tails to break through the soft egg casing. Once they are free we saw that they have eyes, a yolk sac and a tail – but not much else yet.

I’ll post more photos Monday morning.
Happy weekend!
It’s wonderful to hear updates about the salmon eggs hatching. I bet it’s a lot of fun to watch them move around now. Looking forward to future pictures!
