Our class has started a new math unit. We are studying patterns. To begin with we have discussed what we already know about patterns and we have gone into nature to view the natural patterns on our mountain. Here are some photos of the patterns we noticed.
BRANCHING

LINES / MEANDER

EXPLOSION

SPIRAL – also seen on a pineapple, nautilus shells and in galaxies.

The class was very observant and really enjoyed seeing how these patterns present themselves again and again in nature.
For more fun learning about Patterns in Nature and the Fibonnaci sequence check out some videos on You Tube. Here is one that we watched in class:
It was not the best time of year to find examples of PACKING on the mountain ( like in a bee hive) but if you want to be amazed by nature do some more digging and learn about the Hexagonal formations at Giant’s Causeway in Ireland.
If you find more Patterns in Nature – locally or otherwise please feel free to share in the comments.
