Our 55 tiny, pinkish-orange, chum salmon eggs have arrived! They were delivered on Friday January 7th and the students welcomed them this morning.
Here are a few photos – be sure to ask your child to tell you all about them.
We are providing them cold, clean water and lots of oxygen. They have a redd (nest) for when they hatch.
We will monitor their water temperature daily and check the pH and ammonia levels weekly to keep them healthy.
We also calculated the salmon’s ATU (Accumulated Thermal Units) to determine when they will hatch. We predict the hatch will occur on January 27th.

If you have any questions be sure to ask them on this post so we can share the information with everyone. 🙂
We are wondering where the salmon will be released and if the children get to watch! 🙂(And how big they will be when released.)
What a great question! We usually release the salmon into Stoney Creek. The students usually accompany me for this outing. At the present time it is unclear whether we will be able to do this as a fieldtrip due to covid school regulations. Fingers crossed we will be able to.
They look very very cute! Cannot wait to see the progress.
What a great project! Very exciting. What is the redd made of?
It is some large rocks on a bed of gravel.
