How can a force push or pull without making contact?

Posted on October 22, 2021September 29, 2023

We have been studying Force in science class. Students have identified contact (applied force; e.g. push/pull and friction) and non-contact forces (gravity, magnetism and static electricity).

Today in class we were experimenting specifically with the non-contact force of static electricity.

Here is a small video were we used static electricity to attract a small stream of water towards the balloon.

We also played around with creating enough static build up to have the balloon “stick” to the wall.

If you have a balloon at home perhaps you can continue to play/experiment with this concept. Here is a link to a video we watched in class as well.

Have a great long weekend!
