Plant of the Week: Salal Berries
During my hike over the weekend, I found a bumble bee on a Salal flower.
Salal is a type of bush that is native to the area. They grow white-pink flowers (as shown in the photo) and later produce berries that look a little bit like blueberries. You may notice a lot of salal growing all over our region, they thrive in our climate and conditions. The berries are a major source of food for B.C. First Nations; they can be dried and also turned into cakes. Fruit leathers can be made by blending the berries until smooth and then spreading them flat in a pan and drying them in the sun or an oven. Berries can also be used to create a dark blue or purple dye. The branches and leaves of salal are used to line cooking pits and provide flavour. Leaves are used to cover cuts and wounds. (source)
In this news clip, a researcher discovers the extreme health benefits of the salal berry:

When observing the salal and bumble bee:

What do you wonder?
What connections can you make?
b.) Literacy*
This week, we are going to reflect on our learning while looking at the core competencies. In class, we worked on our Growth Portfolios to reflect on our learning over the terms. However, this term, we will have to do things a little different since we don’t have our binders or shared classroom experience. Please note that this assignment is mandatory and required by the Ministry of Education. Please be sure to submit this.
Please reflect on your learning throughout the year. I suggest creating a brainstorming web of all the things we have done in class. Include the third term and the learning you have done at home. Your memory is probably most fresh with what you have done at home so far so feel free to focus on that.
Complete the following handout: core competencies. Please use full sentences and detail.
c.) Math
Please continue your math program.
Khan Academy, IXL, worksheets, etc.
If you would like support/guidance on a math program, please contact me
d.) Literacy – Reading *
This past week has been a pivotal one in our world. There has been a lot of discussion, education and action taking place surrounding diversity, justice, and racism. It is important we have these (age-appropriate) conversations in our homes. If you haven’t had the conversation as a family yet, I encourage you to do so.
There is a list of books compiled by Epic! Books that I would like you to look at: https://www.getepic.com/learn/epic-a-safe-place-to-explore-all-voices/
Please select (at least) one book to reflect and respond to using this response sheet. Please submit this sheet by the end of the week.
Extension (Optional)
e.) Genius Hour (optional)
This is an ongoing project. If you have completed it or are just starting, here is the planning sheet to start a new inquiry: Genius Hour Planning Sheet
Follow these steps:
Brainstorm – what topics interest you? Write down topics that interest you (e.g. birds, palm trees, global warming, Jupiter, etc…). Select one to focus on this week.
Question – What deep questions do you wish to explore on your topic? (e.g. how do birds fly?)
Research – How are you going to find answers to your questions? With limited variety of resources, it will likely be online or an interview with an “expert” on the topic (perhaps family/friends).
Present – How are you going to share your knowledge? Please come up with a a way to briefly present your project. This may be through a speech, slideshow, poster, poem, comic, video, song, etc.
Share – Practice your presentation and share — either to me, family/friends, to the class during Sharing Circle.
Please follow the following planning sheet to guide you through your planning and research.
Have a good day,
Ms. Daneshwand
I notice that there is a bee eating the berries.
I wonder how many berries does the bee go to every day.
The connection between us and the bee is that we both work really hard to get our food.
✝☺😇
I notice that the salsa berries have a white circle sticking out of the salsa berries. I am wondering why the salsa berries is dropping downwards. Maybe it grows better dropping downwards than growing up. it reminds me of the Timbleberry and how it also is dropping downwards. Thank you for listening to this.
When observing the salal and bumble bee: the bubble bee is upside down on the salal
What do you notice?
that the salal is tiny white balls
What do you wonder?
I wonder why the bee is upside down
what connections can you make?
none
I wonder what the flower smells like? I wonder if the honeybee is getting pollen? I think the honey made from these flowers will smell and taste really good.
what connections can you make?
that I like to dye my hair
I notice that the bee is upside down and he is sucking the flower. I wonder why the bee is eating it upside down. My connection is that the bee is busy doing work and collecting food for its family like we are.😊
I notice that the salal has a bee on it and it’s hanging upside down
I wonder why the bee is upside down, maybe the nectar or if there is nectar is right there or if the bee is just hanging there or not?
I noticed that it looks like the bee is sucking nectar from the flower.
that’s a really big bee so i wonder if its a queen bee.
i made a connection because last week or something we went on a walk and i saw a bee sitting on a flower.
I notice that the salal and the bubble bee are both upside down
I wonder how the salal smells does it smell bad or does it smell good????
