I hope you are all well and were able to complete some of yesterday’s tasks with ease.

There are a few things I would like to discuss today before you head off to work:

1. Access to Microsoft Teams page
2. Khan Academy
3. Today’s learning opportunities

 

1. Access to Microsoft Teams page

I notice a handful of students were able to access our Microsoft Teams page. That’s great! This weeks purpose of teams is to, firstly, be able to access it, and secondly, explore the tabs and communication features. Please keep messages brief and widely addressed as this is not a personal chatroom. If you would like to exchange information with peers to have one-on-one chats, contact me and I can speak to your parents to possibly link you up.

The platform I was hoping to use for photo communication (FreshGrade) is glitching due to the server being overwhelmed (too many classrooms switching over!) To reduce technological frustration, I will try sending the codes in the near future when the rush of registration had died down a bit.

I noticed many students were not able to complete the assignments. I encourage you to attempt each task if your situation allows it. However, I understand that

2. Khan Academy

Please explore Khan Academy website. It is a great way to keep on top of math and the different concepts we are expected to learn in third term. I have “assigned” the focus topics which you can see when you access the website with our class code. Please go at your own pace. I will be able to see your activities and your progress. This will help me know where you are at.

I understand that some of you are already working with Khan Academy. Please try to link your account to our class code. If this is not possible, I encourage you to create a new account. This will be helpful because I have selected specific units for our class and I can track your progress.

3. Today’s Learning Opportunities

Create a to-do list. Include the following:

a.) Morning Journal: “What’s going on in this picture?”

We will be practicing our questioning and inferring skills by observing the following picture. Please follow the prompts below to help you make meaning of the picture. Make a comment on this blog post with your questions and inferences. I encourage you to comment on each other’s posts. Remember to provide evidence on your thoughts.

E.g. I think there is a celebration with different countries because of the confetti and the different flags. I wonder what they are celebrating?

They might be in construction or underground because of their uniform and the darkness. What do the different colour hats mean? Where are they?

b.) Explore Khan Academy 

Please take a look at the Khan Academy website and try to become familiar with it. This may require some adult assistance to start but once you get the hang of it, you should be able to access and run it independently. Please create an account by the end of the week. 

c.) Money Math

Please practice becoming familiar with money — coins and bills. Practice adding, subtract, and finding different ways of representing the same amount of $. Familiarity with money will be important for next week.

Word Problems:

1. Lolla bought a balloon at the circus. She gave the clown six coins to pay for it. What could Lolla have paid for the balloon? Which of your answers seems a reasonable amount to pay for a balloon?
2. How many ways can you make $1.75 using 10 coins?Multiplayer game:
   Choose a dollar amount (ex. $2.75).
   Pick a number from 1-20 (either roll a dice, spinner or randomly choose) (ex. 7)
   Whoever can get to the chosen dollar amount using the selected number of coins without going over gets a point. (ex. player 1 made $2.75 with 9 coins and Player 2 made $2.75 with 6 points. Player 2 wins)
   First person to 5 points is the winner.

d.) Show, don’t tell!

As we have discussed in class, good writers are encouraged to “show, not tell”. This means a writer describes what is happening without directly saying.

For example, you can “tell” your reader: “The couch is soft”,

or “show” your reader: “the couch makes me feels like I am hovering over the land on a cloud”

Your task:
Describe a person, place, or thing by showing your reader and not telling.
Please share your place with someone in your home and have them guess where you are describing.

Ex. “The echo of the ball was deafening as I dribbled across. As I jogged down to the hoop, my feet weaving across the black, red, and blue lines painted on the shiny, wooden floor. I take a shot, “woosh”.
Can you guess where I am describing?
