Today we learned about the structure of persuasive writing. It is a 5 paragraph essay that begins with an introduction paragraph, 3 body paragraphs, and a concluding paragraph.
Notice the different colours used in our “hamburger” graphic organizer.
Red ‘easy to take care of’ is a preview for the 1st body paragraph
Green ‘they have incredible instincts’ is a preview for the 2nd body paragraph
Blue ‘they are independent’ is a preview for the 3rd paragraph
Your job tonight is to post your introduction sentence! It should be no longer than one single sentence. Your goal is to communicate to readers what the rest of this essay is going to be about. Keep it simple and make it interesting so that I want to continue reading it!
Here are 2 example of what you might post is:
Cats are unique pets that will make your life better!
A cat is the best four-legged companion that you need in your life!
We introduced persuasive/opinion writing today. Read the student sample of why dogs are the best. Then fill out the brainstorming chart with the reasons and examples that the author included.
We practiced the S.A.D writing technique today to make sure that our instructional writing is as clear as possible.
Students brainstormed something that they would like to teach and began working on a materials list. We also started brainstorming all the specific steps to their tasks.
We worked on starting our main writing unit this term. We will focus on procedural writing, also known as HOW-TO writing.
I did a demonstration on how to brush my teeth using students’ initial instructions. It did not go well!
Watch this video to see why procedural writing is important!
Once done, take a look at the worksheet and begin revising your initial instructions. I will be bringing in my toothbrush, toothpaste, and cup next week and will once again, try to use your instructions to brush my teeth… live… in front of you.
Today we worked on developing our sentences. We turned them from…
“I like sushi” to what you see in the picture below. We used magic transition words to extend our sentences to allow our readers to visualize our words. We also banned the word because.
Build three full and grade level sentences. Make sure to take a look at the example in the first picture.
