Learning at home for the week of April 27 – May 1

Special announcements:  Nil is “Star of the Week”.  Look for his “Star of the Week” email a little bit later.

Zoom Meeting Schedule: Please look for a separate email with the zoom meeting schedule for this week. Please note that your child will have two meetings this week: one Language Arts based lesson with Ms. C. AND a math lesson with Ms. Mah. The zoom links will be sent in emails separately.

Bridge Building Kit: In an email that Ms. Aujla sent out on Friday, she included a link for you to request a “bridge building kit” that John Carinha (PAC Chair) is going to organize and hand out on Friday, May 8 in our school parking lot. If you are interested, please make sure you click on the link in that email to request a kit. It’s sure to be a cool project! I requested a kit for myself so I can build a bridge too!

This is sort of what I was talking about in my post on STEM in my classroom with the reproduction of the pyramids, aqueducts, etc. How these feats were acheived using engineering / technology of the past.

Here are some activity suggestions to try this week. Families can choose how to best fit these into your week.  Do one or do some

DAILY

DO’S

(try to do these every day)

1. Reading – read your RAZ kids books. Try the next level when you think you are ready for it!

2. Get active (see suggestions below “Get outside/get active”)

LITERACY

INTRODUCTION TO BEES – Please have your “All about Bees” booklet and a pencil ready.

Click here for video (part 1) – KWL chart: Write the ideas that you already know about bees and things that you want to learn about bees.

Click here for video (part 2): Add a few facts that you learned after listening to the story.

                                                            Bees Clipart

MY REFLECTION JOURNAL: Complete The front page and pages 2 & 3 of your reflection journal. Please take time to draw and colour to the best of your abilities😉

WRITER’S WORKSHOP:  Take your character (that you made last week) on a field trip/adventure. This adventure may happen outside, in your kitchen, or anywhere you can imagine. Write about where your character went and what happened. We can’t wait to find out if your character is brave, a joker, or helpful by reading about how your character acts.

NUMERACY

MONEY LESSON – In the money booklet that has “Identifying Coins” on the front:

  • On page 28, look at the 4 coins in each row and circle the coin that is worth the most.
  • On page 29, count the value of the pennies.
  • On page 30, trade 5 pennies for a nickel and show the new coins.

2D SHAPES: In your 2D pack, complete the tracing page.

Once you are done, can you draw a picture that uses all 8 of the shapes? If it is nice outside you can draw your picture using sidewalk chalk:) Don’t forget to take a picture so we can see your creativity!

2D “MY SHAPE BOOK”: After you finish constructing, colouring and reading your 2D shape book, play “I Spy” with someone using shapes to give hints. For example, I spy with my little eye something that has 3 triangles.  (See picture below)

WELLNESS

As we learn about different ways to breathe in order to calm our bodies, I would like to introduce LAZY 8 BREATHING. Place your finger on the star and trace the figure 8 while you follow the breathing instructions. Even when you do not have a figure 8 in front of you, you can visualize the 8 in your mind.
