Growing Patterns

You Can try to create growing patterns with other items from home.

From: https://schools.wrdsb.ca/athome/learn/elementary-home/elementary-2/math/math-grades-1-3/

Materials:

  • small objects (e.g. buttons, pebbles, coins)

Instructions:

  • Create a growing pattern and ask your child to explain how the pattern grows. For example, he or she might explain, “You add 1 more penny on the bottom each time” or “The pattern is adding 1 each time.”
  • Try creating some other growing patterns.
  • Create the first four terms of a growing pattern and ask your child to extend the pattern by constructing the next three terms. Ask your child to explain how he or she was able to extend (grow) the pattern.

Variations:

  • Create some shrinking patterns
  • Create a growing pattern using sounds (e.g., stomp stomp clap, stomp stomp clap, clap, etc.

Under The Cup:

From Little Minds at Work:

-Gather 5, 10, 15 or 20 small items to count, such as dried beans, small blocks, pieces of cereal, coins or pebbles.

-You will need a cup.

-Spread your items on a flat surface, such as a plate. Count to be sure there are the number of items you choose.

-Without looking, cover some of the counters with the cup.

-Open your eyes and determine how many counters are under the cup. Repeat several times.

-Try to challenge yourself and use different amounts of items.
