Greetings Families of Division 4
Student Intake interviews will be taking place this October 6 and 7th. Appointment bookings will go live later this week.
Please fill out this survey prior to your appointment. It will guide our discussion and give me some insight into your child. If you are unable to make it during this time or would like a longer time than 10 minutes, please let me know and we can arrange another time to have a meeting.
Even if you are unable to attend a meeting, please fill out the survey so I can help your child have a successful year.
Thank you,
Mr. Wong

This year the students will be using many of the applications included with Office 365. As a student, they have access to them using their student login and password.
At home, in order to access Office 365, they are to use the login and password information that is used to login to the computers at school.
The only difference is the need to add @edu.burnabyschools.ca
For example, 123456@edu.burnabyschools.ca
You also have the ability to download the Office 365 Suite. This can be accessed from the Capitol Hill website using the OFFICE 365 link near the top right of the page.
https://capitolhill.burnabyschools.ca/
Once you have logged in, you have the option of installing Office 365.
If you have questions or your child has forgotten their login and password, just send me an email at jason.wong@burnabyschools.ca and I can provide the information to you.
This year the students will be writing a weekly TWAS letter. Each week I will have different criteria to add into their writing. There is no need to correct any mistakes. Please have someone initial or sign and have them bring it back at the beginning of the following week.
Each week the students will be posting and reflecting on a piece of work, activity, or other school related work on their BLOGFOLIO. This is a great way to see what is happening in Division 4.

This introductory newsletter is to provide you with information about how things run in the classroom, daily routines and expectations. This first newsletter will be in hard copy and on my class blog. Any future communication will be through the blog – https://sd41blogs.ca/wongj/. I have been told that every time a new post gets uploaded, you will get a notification in your email inbox. Please let me know if you prefer a hard copy or if you have not been receiving these notifications. Also, if anyone else would like to be added or removed from this list.
These first few weeks will be used to get the students back into the routine and get ready for the upcoming academic year. We will be doing a lot on routines, respect, building a safe classroom community, and preassessment in reading, writing, spelling, and math.
Class Expectations
The student’s expectations are based on three “R’s” – RESPECT, RESPONSIBILITY and RESILIANCE in four areas – SELF, CLASSROOM, SCHOOL, and COMMUNITY. We work every day to become mindful of our own actions and how they affect us, individuals and groups around us.
My goal is to provide tools for each student to ensure they are successful in life when dealing with situations that all under one of these three anecdotes:
I consider myself a fair teacher. I try my best to disapprove of what the child “does” and not who the child “is”. I try my best to provide tools that will help them be successful in all aspects of their life. I believe that “I don’t know” is never an acceptable answer when it comes to their actions, whether positive or negative. I am always available to discuss any of my core beliefs or if your child tells you something that happened in class that may concern you.
Classroom Routines
Class routines are very important to keep the class on track and to help us move smoothly from one activity to the next in a predictable and structured manner. These include knowing what to do in the morning (putting backpacks away, washing their hands, doing their morning math), how we transition between activities, how the day progresses, and how we get ready to leave for the day. A great way to build communication between you and your child is to ask them about the classroom routines.
Arrival and Dismissal
The first school bell rings at 8:50 am. It is important that your child is in attendance and is ready for the day. Should your child arrive after 8:55, they should check in at the office.
Dismissal is at 2:47pm. If the weather is nice, the students will frequently be dismissed from the playground. To ensure that the students do not leave early, their bags will NOT be with them until the 2:47 bell.
Planner
This year the students will not be given planners. They are encouraged to find a system that will help them to remember due dates and important events. A small journal or planner is a good choice.
Permission and Verification Forms
These forms will be sent out shortly. Please ensure that these forms have been returned ASAP. This is important as we launch into using electronic devices for our digital portfolios, research, as well as all other areas of learning. In addition, occasionally we will be going out into the community on walking fieldtrips to expand our learning outside the four walls of the classroom. Your child will not be able to participate unless they have been returned.
CSL (Communicating Student Learning), BLOGfolios and TWAS (This Week at School)
This year the students will showcase their learning. One way is through the digital BLOGfolio. This will be an opportunity for students to share work at various stages and offer their thoughts on the progress and product of their work weekly. You will be notified by email every time a new post goes live. If you are not receiving these notifications or would like to be added or deleted, just let me know.
The students will also be developing their writing skills through their weekly TWAS. This also gives you and the child another way to start a discussion of what happened at school.
SEL (Social Emotional Learning) and Mindfulness
A large part of learning is to be ready for learning. My goal is to help the students become aware of their emotions and develop a growth mindset. With these tools, the students will be able get their body and mind ready for learning and know how to persevere when facing obstacles or problems. Each morning we will do a mindfulness activity to prepare for the day.
Additional School Supplies
In addition to the Intermediate Supply List, please have your child bring the following supplies (there may be some additional supplies that are required throughout the year). If you are unable to get any of these supplies, just let me know and I do have some extras:
