Microsoft TEAMS

Hello everyone,

I am working on setting up the students on Microsoft Teams. It will be an online learning platform that the students can have access to using their Burnaby school district log in information.

Please follow this link to download the Microsoft Teams App/Desktop version if you don’t already have it.

https://products.office.com/en-ca/microsoft-teams/download-app

To log into Teams, students will use their pupil number (which they use as their login for the school computers) followed by @edu.burnabyschools.ca and their password is the same one they use to login to schools computers as well.

For example: 12345678@edu.burnabyschools.ca

Many of  the students had their computer login information memorized when we left at spring break. I will email parents with their exact login and password just to be sure though.

Right now there isn’t anything posted on Teams yet, but please use this week to download the app/desktop access and try logging in with your child’s information. Please email me if you are not able to login so that I can try and help!

Take care,

Week of April 6-9

Hello everyone!

I am attaching this week’s Morning Activities and Spelling as our assignments for the week.

  • Morning Activities: These are completed by students first thing every morning. There is one Language Arts and one Math for each day of the week. Students can go through them independently and correct/answer as much as they can. Then, they may need parent help with a few questions.

For example: The first question in the Language Arts is a sentence that needs correcting. The sentence reads,

we saw a brown hawk siting on top of a pole.

Students should look for capitalization errors, spelling errors and punctuation errors. This sentence has 2 corrections needed (capitalization and spelling). It should read,

We saw a brown hawk sitting on top of a pole.

  • Spelling: We will continue on with our spelling groups. At school, spelling is done 3 times a week. At home, you may do it 2-3 times a week depending on your schedule. There are 2 spelling programs running. For example, you could do Day 1 and 2 together if you wish. Here are the order of activities the students complete. Students are familiar with the language “Cut/Sort”, “Sort/Write”. These instructions are for the Words Their Way spelling groups (white, pink and green papers).

Day 1: Cut/Sort: Get new words, cut out the words and sort them into categories. Say the words to self and ask if they don’t know what a word means.

Day 2: Sort/Write: Sort the words into categories again, write the words down on paper under their category.

Day 3: Sentences: Choose 15 spelling words and write them in a complete sentence.

  • These instructions are for the Building Spelling Skills group (yellow papers).

Day 1: Copy and Spell: Get new words, read through list and copy the words beside. Say words to self and ask if they don’t know what a word means. Do activity on the next page (page 2). These activities vary week to week.

Day 2: Do activity on the next page (page 3).These activities vary week to week.

Day 3: Do activity on the next page (page 4).These activities vary week to week.

  • The final thing we do with spelling is, of course, our weekly spelling test on Friday. If you wish to, you can do a spelling test for your child as well!

**Please make any changes to this plan as you need to. For example, if you do not have a printer, obviously they do not need to cut their spelling words out. Instead, have them sort the words into their categories on a spare piece of paper. If you feel this is too much to accomplish in the week, cut down to the amount that works for you and your family!

I am here to help with any questions you might have. Please e-mail me! If you wish, you can send a picture of their completed work but this is not mandatory! Later on, there will be “assignments” that I will ask to have sent back to me. Please use these “assignments” to create a routine and continue with activities that are familiar with your child. They have done these 2 tasks every week since September! I think they will do great with them!

Let me know if you need to connect more. You can e-mail me or we can arrange a time to have a phone conversation!

Best of luck this week,

Ms. West πŸ™‚

A note about EPIC books

Just a quick note about using EPIC books.

Unfortunately, Epic is only “free” and available to use during school hours (9am-3pm). If you try and log in outside of these hours, it will prompt to pay a subscription fee. Sorry for the confusion! I am hoping they open it up to all times soon! But please feel free to use it from 9-3 at your leisure.

New Online Resource

Hi Everyone!

I was able to go into the building for the first time today to get some of my personal items. It felt very strange to be in our empty classroom and school!

I have signed up our classroom to IXL.com. IXL is a comprehensive learning program offering unlimited math and English language arts across thousands of skillsβ€”all of which are aligned to the provincial curriculum. It can be used on any tablet/iPad or on a desktop computer.

What I like about IXL is that it is divided into grade levels and then broken down by skill as well. This way it is easier to work on the areas that we may not have been able to cover yet or review others. It is also less of a “game” and looks like a “worksheet/textbook” compared to Prodigy math. It also will allow me to “assign” certain areas if I feel there is something specific that the students should work on.

I will e-mail all parents today/tomorrow with their child’s username and password. For now, please use this as you like. I do not expect everyone to be on doing math/language arts lessons for hours a day. It is simply just a platform to help those who need it and are looking for something more academic to do with their child.

I am also looking into how to best get some “non-screen time” related activities to you all in the near future! I know we are all a little concerned about the amount of screen time the students will be engaged in now!

For now, I have not attached any parent email address to their child’s account. If you would like to be attached to their account, please message me with the e-mail address you would like to add.

Take care everyone!

Div. 4 Online Resources

Hello students and families,

Here is a list of the online platforms that students already use in our classroom. They all already have accounts and can continue using them at home!

Students already have login codes and passwords. I can email you their information if they do not have it memorized already.

Students have profiles created already under our class code. Click on the Students and Educators button and enter the class code tjp9872 this will allow you to see your child’s profile. They will have access to thousands of books!

This is a free site that does not require an account. There are many good “games” to try out that practice Numeracy and Literacy skills under Numbers and Letters for each grade level. There are also a lot of “fun” games under Skills and Holidays. I would suggest a balance between something more academic focused on the Literacy or Numeracy “games” and then if you need something for down time, the Skills and Holiday selection are good for fun!

Keep safe! Thinking of you all,

Ms. West πŸ™‚

Hello Families

Hello Students and Families,

I hope you are all well! I will be contacting you in the next couple of days.

I will post some information shortly about the online learning platforms we already use in our classroom. Please feel free to explore and use these platforms if you wish. It is not mandatory! Just thought they could help in these transitioning weeks!

Take care!

Stream of Dreams

We had a great time participating in Stream of Dreams. We learned a lot about our local streams and what we can do to protect them. We enjoyed painting our fish to go on our school fence.
