This Week’s Activities – Dinosaurs and Subtraction

| Posted in Uncategorized

Hello Div. 18 🙂

I hope everyone is doing well, and has had a great weekend. This week, some Taylor Park students will be returning to in-class instruction. As a result, I will be on-site Mon/Tues in our classroom. I will continue to get our learning opportunities out by Monday mornings, but I do apologize as I will be unavailable to Zoom during these two days. As well, my responses to FreshGrade and emails may be delayed on these two days. Thank you for understanding as we move forward in this new phase of learning and teaching. As well, we have been lucky to be extended an opportunity to visit the Vancouver Aquarium via Zoom field trip! The time slot available for our class is at 2:15PM on Friday June 5th. I recognize that this is a Pro – D Day, so if you are able to come I am sure we will have fun – but this is not mandatory. The theme will be reptiles and amphibians 🙂

June 1st – 4th

Core Activities :

  • Read 20 minutes daily – just as we would have every day in our classroom for Daily 5
  • Read the assigned book in your Epic profile, and please try to answer the questions about that book. This will help me check everyone’s understanding of the stories they read – just like we do during Daily 5 in school when you ‘Read with Teacher’
  • Journals: For this week I want to ask you to think creatively. Your topic is: If you had to eat only one food for the rest of your life, what would it be? Why? What does this food smell like, taste like, look like, sound like, feel like? Try using your 5 senses to help you describe the food, and give a reason why you would want to eat this food forever. I have uploaded an example to FreshGrade 🙂
  • Do the assigned activity on your Zorbit account
  • Math: This week we will begin to look at basic subtraction facts and processes. Subtracting is the opposite of adding because we are always ‘taking away’ some number, ‘removing’ or using the ‘minus’ sign. For example, if I have 5 pencils, and I lose 2 of them, how many pencils do you think I would have left? Let’s explore a few ways to find the answer. Check out these charts I have made that help explain subtracting a bit:

This week, I am hoping for Gr. 1’s to complete these math questions:

And for Gr. 2’s to complete these math questions:

If you would like some extra math work, I encourage you to try both!

Supplementary Activities :

  • Families – I recognize that Friday is a Pro D Day at Taylor Park, however we do have something special planned so I hope you are able to attend – This week’s class Zoom meeting is on Friday June 5th at 2:15 – please join if you can. We will be visiting the Vancouver Aquarium to learn about reptiles and amphibians! Oliver in our class has been a member of the Vancouver Aquarium for a long time, and has been invited to take his classmates for a virtual lesson – thank you Oliver! The Zoom link will be provided by the Aquarium later this week and I will post it to our class FreshGrade to remain private, as soon as I can 🙂  Parents – as before you are of course welcome to join us, and if anyone would prefer to have their cameras off for privacy that is absolutely ok. The Vancouver Aquarium The link will be posted on FreshGrade to remain private to only Div. 18.
  • If you have time, try this cardboard Dinosaur artwork idea! You can decorate the dinosaurs however you want, even using yarn, glitter, or construction paper. Here are a few pictures to show the steps on how I made my example:

Step 1: Draw your dinosaur shape on cardboard, with the legs separate

Step 2: Colour and fill in your dinosaur. Remember to fill in both sides so your dinosaur can be 3D

Step 3: Cut out the three parts of the dinosaur – remember to cut the little black indents on the legs carefully, so they can be attached to the body. You might need to ask an adult to help with this part

Step 4: Assemble!

  • Check out these ‘Podcasts’ recorded by Mr. Cockram’s class (gr. 6/7) https://westwords.podbean.com/ They are specifically for the primary students of Taylor Park and all feature variations of classic tales – You could draw a picture to show the beginning, middle, or end of one of these stories.
  • I challenge you to take a video of yourself, showing and talking how you would subtract two numbers. For example, you could use 10 buttons, take away 7 of them, and then show what is left. I have uploaded a video of myself doing the same to your FreshGrade accounts – check it out and make your own 🙂
