This Week’s Activities – Reading Comprehension and Double Digit Addition

| Posted in Uncategorized

Hello Div. 18 Families šŸ™‚

I hope everyone got to enjoy the beautiful weather we had this weekend! As well, Happy Mother’s Day to all the moms and grandmothers in Div. 18 – I hope you had a wonderful day!

May 11th – 15th Focus: Reading Comprehension & Double Digit Addition (without regrouping)

Core Activities :Ā

  • Read 20 minutes daily – just as we would have every day in our classroom for Daily 5
  • Read the assigned book in your Epic profile, and please try to answer the questions about that book. This will help me check everyoneā€™s understanding of the stories they read – just like we do during Daily 5 in school when you ā€˜Read with Teacherā€™Ā
  • Journals: Watch the new video of Ms. Vlasic reading ā€œDonā€™t Let the Pigeon Stay Up Lateā€ on FreshGrade: Then, answer at least two of these comprehension questions about the story in your journal.
    • What happens in the beginning of the story?
    • What is the problem in the story?
    • How does the problem get solved?Ā
    • Who is the main character? How do you know?

Please remember to use proper punctuation such as periods, exclamation marks and capitals in the right places, just like you would at school. If you find you would like an extra challenge when writing, try to explain why you think the Pigeon would want to stay up late?Ā

  • Do the assigned activity on your Zorbit account.
  • This week we will begin reviewing double digit addition. I have posted a video of myself explaining this chart on your child’s Freshgrade account. Give it a look when you have time. Here are two charts I have made to help explain double digit addition: Ā  Ā

Your math activity for this week will be to complete these questions on a separate paper :

If you would like to do even more, I invite you to show me your work on one of these questions in either standard form, expanded form, base ten form, or on a number line like the example above. This will help you to continue to practice double digit addition, butĀ  encourage thinking about how to solve a problem in more than one way – to create flexible math brains!

If it helps, here are two more videos explaining double digit addition without regrouping from Youtube:

Supplementary Activities : Ā

  • This weekā€™s class Zoom meeting is on Wednesday May 13th at 10:00am – join if you can. The link will be posted on FreshGrade to remain private to only Div. 18. This week, we will try to do a guided drawing art activity, so remember to bring a pencil and paper to the session! šŸ™‚Ā
  • Review our class reading strategies with a family member. Can you show them how you use one of the strategies? For example, if you know you often use picture clues to tell what is in a story, can you show a family member where you get the picture clues and what they help you with? Try to be a teacher and show someone how useful at least one of the strategies can be. (These are the key principles I have used to teach reading in our class throughout the school year to help students build independence when reading).
Here is a picture of our class strategies bookmark, as well as our strategies poster to help you remember:
  • Consider playing ‘Emotion Charades’ with your family: Each member writes 3 different emotion words (such as angry, excited, shy) on a small paper and puts them in a hat. Each person selects a paper from the hat and acts it out – everyone else has to guess what it is!
  • Get your wiggles out with some Cosmic Kids Yoga atĀ https://cosmickids.com/category/watch/Ā  You can do a ‘Zen’ yoga practice, to help us slow down and breathe, you can do an ‘Active’ yoga practice to get a lot of energy out, or you can do a ‘Focus’ yoga practice. I really like the ‘Focus’ videos, because they help put me in the Green Zone to be calm and ready to learn.
