Rugby 2016 Mid Season Update
The senior team is rolling along very well at the mid point of the season. They are 2 and 1 in league play. The team has been highlighted by exciting back play and hard running by the forwards. Stay tuned for the team stats. Standings can be found on the bcssru.com website.
The Junior Rugby 7s Team participated in the Lower Mainland Development tournament and came away finishing 5th out of 10 teams. The team could have placed much higher but came out short when 3 teams were tied for 2nd in our pool. The team won against Prince of Wales and West Vancouver but lost close ones to St. Georges B and Collingwood B (eventual champions). They defeated Sentinel in the 5/6 placing game.

Leadership Update Winter 2015
This year the Senior Leadership class has been busy organizing many events and improving their leadership skills. Our Terry Fox run was a huge success this year by smashing previous donation records. The school raised $2,288.88 for the Terry Fox Foundations. We wanted to recognize the 3 classes who raised the most: Ms. Dunne’s, Ms. V. Pereira’s and Mr. Shier’s. At the end of our run Charles Yu, Nolan Welsh and Brolan Masuhara were the first to reach the finish line.
Up next for the class was the Fall Pep Rally. The teams who performed included the Sr. and Jr. Girls Volleyball, Sr. Boys Volleyball, Sr. Boys Soccer, The Whitecaps, The Cross Country Team and the Theatre Production Team. Every team did an amazing job with their dance or cheer but the Whitecaps stole the show with their dance-off.
The class is currently organizing their Christmas Events like the Gingerbread House Event with Primary Grades and Basketball and Volleyball Intramurals. During our Food Drive, the school was able to donate 24 boxes of food to the Greater Vancouver Food Bank and with the help of this year’s Intramural teams, we were able to raise $183. The winner of this year’s Deck The Door Contest was Mrs. Hemmingway’s Period 2 Class. Runner Ups were Mrs. Dunne and the entire Home Ec. Department. Photos of our winners can be seen at the Leadership Class webpage (http://sd41blogs.ca/central-leadership/). Thank you to everyone who participated in these great events!

2014-2015 Update: Leadership, Rugby, Intramurals, Mentorship
With the school year halfway over, there are lots of exciting things going on at Burnaby Central. Here is a quick update on a few of them:
Leadership Class – This year the class organized the annual Fall Team Pep Rally in the first week of November. This year’s Christmas Projects included Gingerbread House Event with our neighbouring Elementary Schools, Food Drive, Deck the Door, and Santa Photos.

Intramurals – Co-Ed Volleyball (Senior and Junior Divisions) were competed on Dec. 3 with the Quack Pack and Elites winning their respective division. In the Badminton Intramurals, Daniel Ho and Bio Yoon won the open division. The Floor Hockey Intramural Championships begin in March 2015.

Junior Rugby Update
The Junior Rugby Team is nearing the end of their season and so far have shown a lot of promise for the future of Rugby at Burnaby Central. They recently revenged a close loss to Lord Byng by defeating them in an exciting overtime win in the Lower Mainland 7s Tournament. The team also defeated Kitsilano High School in an exciting game by a score of 34 to 33. The Team then lost to a very strong team in McRoberts from Richmond. The game was very close at the start but after a few injuries, the team fell behind at the end. They were able to revenge this loss on May 7 by defeating McRoberts 33 to 19 at our home field. On this day, the team was led by veterans like Kenny Cai, returning players like Mac Burns, and rookies like Trevor Lougheed who demonstrated a textbook tackle that helped cement the game for us (see photos below). With the help of former grads and current players at the Burnaby Lake Rugby Club, Liem Jung and Admir Cejvanovic, the team has continually improved especially in our contact and team play. Unfortunately, in our last game the team came up against a very strong side in Carson Graham in the Vancouver District Semi Final on May 13.
Team point leaders are: Kenny Cai 4 tries 3 converts (26 pts), Trevor Lougheed 4 T (20 pts.), Mac Burns 4 T (20 pts), Ansel Hait 2 T (10 pts), Myles Molla 1 T (5 pts), Calvin Watts 1T (5 pts), Kenzo Racanelli 1 T (5 pts), Austin Arotta 4 converts (8 pts). Team award winners were Best Forward – Mac Burns, Aiden Bate-Smith, Best Back – Kenny Cai, Top Rookies (back) Trevor Lougheed, (forward) Ansel Hait.

2013-2014 Senior Leadership Class
This year’s class has undertaken many exciting events to start of the school year. After Dragonboating, organizing the Terry Fox Run and helping out at the Gr. 8 Retreat the class held the always popular Fall Sports Pep Rally. This year’s event looked and sounded great. The sounds were provided by the cheers of the Senior Girls Volleyball, Cross Country and Dance Team. The Cheer Team started off the event with an exciting performance. Next, the class has organized a number of other school and community events including Gingerbread Houses with our feeder schools, Basketball Skills Competition, Photos with Santa, Mitten Drive, Winter Showcase and Centralympics.
Intramural Update
The winners of this year’s Co-Ed Volleyball Intramurals were Squiggles (Snr Champs) and Chow Sprite Nation (Jnr Champs). The Squiggles barely beat the staff team, The Disciplinarians, in a grudge match for bragging rights.
