Monday is RED DAY– wear RED today

Tuesday is BLUE DAY– wear BLUE today

Wednesday is GREEN DAY – wear GREEN today

Thursday is YELLOW DAY – wear YELLOW today

Friday is SPORTS DAY – wear the colour of your house team and don’t forget to dress for the weather and wear running shoes!

Don’t forget to put sunscreen on your child and have them wear a hat if the weather is sunny!  We will be outside all morning!
If your child would like to participate in the bike parade on Sports Day:
  1. Decorate your bike prior to Friday, in your house team colour (you can use balloons, streamers, flowers etc..)
  2. Bring your bike to school in the morning at 8:45am on FRIDAY (SPORTS DAY)
  3. Place your bike by the chain-link fence closest to RUMBLE STREET on the gravel field. Please place in front of the sign for your colour team. An adult will be supervising and watching bikes outside in the morning until the Bike Parade starts.

2 more eggs hatched today Sunday June 9th

Once again we have 2 more new hatches today!  Egg #11 and #10

Number 10 needed some help as he was open for a long time and the inner membrane was dry and attached to its body.  It also was stuck in the bottom 1/2 the shell since Saturday. I moved it to the other incubator so the other chicks wouldn’t step on him (as you know they like to crawl all over each other, especially when they are learning to walk). Here is number 10 resting after its long hard birth. Let’s hope it is ok and survives!  We will need a big survival or fighter name for it. Any suggestions???  Email me some suggestions at denise.silva@burnabyschools.ca

Here are a few names I looked up:

Anakin means warrior                                          Magnar means a strong and fierce warrior who survives

Clovis means the one who fights for survival       Louella a strong fighter

There is life happening in the class incubator

Good morning Div. 8,

Well it is happening…

We have new life coming from the eggs in the class incubator.  On Saturday June 8th, Egg #9 decided to poke its head out.

YES, you heard that correctly EGG #9 was the first egg to hatch from our class incubator! Who guessed that EGG 9 would be the first one to hatch?

HELLO DIV.8

The second egg to hatch was #3 and then #4.

3 hatches on Saturday June 8th.

OUR CHICKS ARE HATCHING

We have had a very busy 3 daysWe now have 7 chicks that have hatched from the incubator I had at home, as I needed to monitor it due to the humidity and temperature fluctuations. The 3 newborn  chicks and the incubator were brought to school on Thursday June 6th.  We had 2 more eggs hatched in the evening at roughly 4:00pm and 5:10pm.  Chick #7 hatching was caught on video!  See below.  Div. 8 students were super excited to meet them.  The next morning when I arrived at school at 7:00am there were 2 more in the incubator that had either hatched sometime in the late evening Thursday June 6th or early early morning of Friday June 7th!  Div. 8 now has 7 new chicks!

Here is the video link to chick #7 hatching.  Enjoy it is pretty incredible!

Today is Day 20 for Home Incubator and Day 19 for School Incubator

Day 20:  Today our chick will begin to show its internal and external pip.

The internal pip is when the chick has finally, through a lot of hard work, made that initial break into the air cell with it’s beak.

The external pip is the first visible sign of the hatch. That little “bump” in the shell. The little crack that you aren’t sure you are seeing. That first hole. The chick’s attempt to make a connection with the outside world.

Look at what is happening today at home:  Look at #3

As I was walking in my kitchen I could hear the slightest little “peep, peep” and I instantly ran to the incubator, which happens to be sitting on my kitchen counter, and looked super closely at all the eggs and to my surprise it “peeped” again.  It was #3 starting to make a little hole in the shell.  Here is a little video of this:

Day 18- 4 more days until our chicks hatch!!

Today is Day 18 (June 3 for EZ.Simply Incubator @ Ms. Silva’s) and June 4th for the school incubator!

Today our chick will begin to have the embryo fill the space and the yolks sac is absorbed.

Days 18-21: Pre-hatching

By day 18, the embryo has developed into a chick and will take up most of the space in the egg. The chick is preparing to hatch. We are doing a few things to help the baby chick prepare for the HATCH:

  • Stop egg-turning at day 18 with the larger end of the egg facing up. At this point, the chick will position itself for hatching inside the egg.
  • Maintain a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius but increase humidity to 70 percent.

I will be working this week on Thursday June 5th and Friday June 6th, so I am at school for the HATCH with you!  Looking forward to this exciting time!  Parents are welcome to come in and check out what is happening.

Exciting Video of Candling on Day 9

Hi Div. 8 and families,

I have some exciting news.  Yesterday was Day 9 for the eggs that I have at home in the incubator, and Day 8 for the eggs we have in the classroom.  I have a video to share today of the Candling I did last night as I was checking on our eggs to see if they were growing.  Candling is the process of shining light through the air cell of an egg checking for the development inside an incubated egg.

In the video you will see Egg #9.

Notice the following while watching the video:

-The blood vessels -red lines going towards the center that resembles a red spiderweb.  These red blood vessels and veins are connected to the yolk and Albumin(egg white), and are responsible for absorbing the nutrients for the embryo to grow and develop.

-The embryo outline (looks like a bean shape)

-The black dot on the embryo, which is the eye. The eye is almost fully developed at this point.

-The Air Cell located at the top end (wide end of the egg).  This is the circular space you see almost as a light on the top of the egg.

Enjoy the video and we will talk more about it tomorrow!

Our Chicken Eggs are in the incubator!

Hello Division 8 Students, Parents and Families,

I picked up our chicken eggs on Thursday and they are now in the incubators.  12 eggs were put in on Thursday May 16th (rectangular brown EZ.SIMPLY incubator)

and another 12 eggs on Friday May 17th (Clear Round TRIOCOTTAGE incubator)

The eggs have been placed inside the incubator. This process is called “setting the eggs.”

Eggs must be physically turned to prevent the developing chick from sticking to the shell. More scientifically, the embryo should be resting on top of the yolk. The yolk tends to float upward, on top of the albumen (egg white) towards the shell if the egg is not turned. As a result, the developing embryo can be squeezed between the yolk and the shell, causing potentially fatal damage. By turning the eggs, the yolk turns within the albumin, once again moving the yolk away from the shell and making it safe for the embryo on top until it is time to turn again.

Eggs need to be turned a minimum of 3 times per day. Fortunately our incubators are automatic and it turns the eggs every two hours.

I will be bringing the Triocottage incubator to school on Tuesday May 21st and the eggs will remain in the incubator in the classroom until they hatch. The EZ.Simply Incubator will remain with me in my home, as it is a bit more finicky and I need to keep an I on the humidity level.  Incubation will be 21 days for each incubator, so that will mean that Hatch Day will be June 5th and June 6th.  We are super excited and hope you are as well.  Please stay tuned and I will post details about the stages of the embryos as they are developing. I look forward to keeping you informed and have you follow us on this incredible journey.

Warmly,

Denise Silva
