2 more eggs hatched today Sunday June 9th

Once again we have 2 more new hatches today!  Egg #11 and #10

Number 10 needed some help as he was open for a long time and the inner membrane was dry and attached to its body.  It also was stuck in the bottom 1/2 the shell since Saturday. I moved it to the other incubator so the other chicks wouldn’t step on him (as you know they like to crawl all over each other, especially when they are learning to walk). Here is number 10 resting after its long hard birth. Let’s hope it is ok and survives!  We will need a big survival or fighter name for it. Any suggestions???  Email me some suggestions at denise.silva@burnabyschools.ca

Here are a few names I looked up:

Anakin means warrior                                          Magnar means a strong and fierce warrior who survives

Clovis means the one who fights for survival       Louella a strong fighter

There is life happening in the class incubator

Good morning Div. 8,

Well it is happening…

We have new life coming from the eggs in the class incubator.  On Saturday June 8th, Egg #9 decided to poke its head out.

YES, you heard that correctly EGG #9 was the first egg to hatch from our class incubator! Who guessed that EGG 9 would be the first one to hatch?

HELLO DIV.8

The second egg to hatch was #3 and then #4.

3 hatches on Saturday June 8th.

OUR CHICKS ARE HATCHING

We have had a very busy 3 daysWe now have 7 chicks that have hatched from the incubator I had at home, as I needed to monitor it due to the humidity and temperature fluctuations. The 3 newborn  chicks and the incubator were brought to school on Thursday June 6th.  We had 2 more eggs hatched in the evening at roughly 4:00pm and 5:10pm.  Chick #7 hatching was caught on video!  See below.  Div. 8 students were super excited to meet them.  The next morning when I arrived at school at 7:00am there were 2 more in the incubator that had either hatched sometime in the late evening Thursday June 6th or early early morning of Friday June 7th!  Div. 8 now has 7 new chicks!

Here is the video link to chick #7 hatching.  Enjoy it is pretty incredible!

Today is Day 20 for Home Incubator and Day 19 for School Incubator

Day 20:  Today our chick will begin to show its internal and external pip.

The internal pip is when the chick has finally, through a lot of hard work, made that initial break into the air cell with it’s beak.

The external pip is the first visible sign of the hatch. That little “bump” in the shell. The little crack that you aren’t sure you are seeing. That first hole. The chick’s attempt to make a connection with the outside world.

Look at what is happening today at home:  Look at #3

As I was walking in my kitchen I could hear the slightest little “peep, peep” and I instantly ran to the incubator, which happens to be sitting on my kitchen counter, and looked super closely at all the eggs and to my surprise it “peeped” again.  It was #3 starting to make a little hole in the shell.  Here is a little video of this:

Day 18- 4 more days until our chicks hatch!!

Today is Day 18 (June 3 for EZ.Simply Incubator @ Ms. Silva’s) and June 4th for the school incubator!

Today our chick will begin to have the embryo fill the space and the yolks sac is absorbed.

Days 18-21: Pre-hatching

By day 18, the embryo has developed into a chick and will take up most of the space in the egg. The chick is preparing to hatch. We are doing a few things to help the baby chick prepare for the HATCH:

  • Stop egg-turning at day 18 with the larger end of the egg facing up. At this point, the chick will position itself for hatching inside the egg.
  • Maintain a temperature of 37 degrees Celsius but increase humidity to 70 percent.

I will be working this week on Thursday June 5th and Friday June 6th, so I am at school for the HATCH with you!  Looking forward to this exciting time!  Parents are welcome to come in and check out what is happening.
