Are your days feeling really long now that the rain is here?

Below are some ideas I took from a resource I have in my classroom called HOP (Healthy Opportunities for Preschoolers) by LEAP BC

I just looked and the whole book of over 50 activities is online!!

You can find it here :

HOP – Family Resource

Fall Exploration

So I went on a walk today at Robert Burnaby Park.

Look at this beautiful spot I found!

A StrongStart friend was having lots of fun in the water!

As we walked towards the playground we discovered a pile of leaves.

My friend hid and his Grandmother and I covered him up!

Look what else caught my eye

I wonder what made all those holes in the tree?

As I went on my walk I filled my pockets.

Look at all the amazing things I found!!

First I sorted them. And that inspired me to make these:

I would love to see what natural materials you found and what you created with them!! Email me a photo at Beth.bosnick@burnabyschools.ca

My friend Lillian at Twelfth Ave. StrongStart was inspired by the story Leaf Man.  Click below to see what she created after reading the story!

Fun with a Pumpkin!

If we were in the classroom right now we would be engaging with a pumpkin in a variety of ways.

I am not an advocate of wasting food.

So below are many different ways to use the pumpkin and make them valuable learning opportunities.

(hint: store your pumpkin in a cool place to prevent it from rotting)

Paint it. Use washable paints so that you can paint it many times.

Hammer it.  Help your little one pull them out and this becomes a never-ending activity!!  Caution do not leave the wooden golf tees in the pumpkin for more than one hour.  They swell making them difficult to pull out and reuse.

Peg board.  Provide elastics and connect the pegs by stretching the elastics over them.

Light it up. Clean out the pumpkin and put a candle inside. No need to carve a design in the pumpkin as the golf tee holes have already done the job!!!

Pumpkin goo. Investigate on a tray with your child what is inside a pumpkin.

Roast pumpkin seeds. Pumpkin seeds can be roasted and are a yummy fall treat!!

Fall is Here!

Fall is my favourite season. My senses go wild.   My nose with the smell of wet soggy leaves, my eyes love the beautiful colours with a blue sky as the back drop and my ears love the crunch of the leaves under my feet!  I love looking for vibrant coloured leaves that have fallen and decorating my dining table. I have fond memories of collecting things in nature with my boys and making piles of leaves to jump in and hide in.

Maybe the stories below will inspire you to play in the leaves . Take along a bag or bucket on your walks so that you can bring natural materials home, they are FREE!  Wonder with your child what you might do with these materials. Could you sort them, order them, glue them, cut them?

I know that many are limiting their children’s use of screen time.  So here are some ideas of what you could do with the stories I suggest below:

1. Watch the stories yourself .

2. Borrow them from the library.

3. Watch the stories with your child.

Painting with Objects at Home

There are many objects in your home you can use to make prints!

All you need is washable paint, objects and paper!

Here are some objects I found in my home!

Toilet paper rolls are great because they give little hands a nice big handle and can be bent in a variety of ways to create different shapes.

I cut one of my tubes and put a plastic shopping bag in the other!

Look what happens when you use paint!

Making Giant Bubbles with Teacher Beth!!!

Recipe for Giant Bubbles:

  • 6 cups of warm water
  • 1/2 cup of blue Dawn original dishwashing detergent
  • 1 TBSP of corn syrup (or glycerin, if you happen to have some)

Mix all of the ingredients gently. Here is the secret: The bubble liquid gets better the longer it sits! It should marinate overnight at least.  This solution gets better with age and should last awhile! Tip: Just dip wands into the solution don’t stir or swish. It creates small bubbles and stops working. Enjoy!

Indoor Active Fun

It can be challenging to be indoors for long periods of time, especially  when your little one is active and needs space to move.

All children need opportunities to be physically active in order to :

*Discover the connection this creates between themselves and the world

*Learn how and why their bodies move to reduce the chances of injury later in life

*Build the competence and confidence that comes with being physically literate

Check out these physically active games that you can play inside!

A Sensory Activity for Babies…..

I would love to share with you an activity one of my StrongStart colleagues

created and posted on her blog.

Gael is the StrongStart facilitator at Chaffey-Burke StrongStart.

It captured my attention and imagination and made

me wonder the endless possibilities of things you could put in the ziploc bag!!

It also made me wonder what other materials you could use instead of water!

Okay my littlest friends… This activity is for you 🙂

Go for a walk and collect a few nature pieces… a stick… a petal… a few leaves…

Grab a large ziplock bag, a big glass of water and some wide packing or masking tape. I used a little rubbing alcohol to wipe away the ziploc label but if you don’t have it at home just skip this step!

Place all your treasures inside the bag along with the water.

Gently squeeze the air out of the bag. Take the tape and seal the bag onto the floor. Take another piece of tape and place it on the bottom of the bag.

(I only had hockey tape left)

Lie down baby and let them explore with their hands.

Feel free to add other treasures!
