Butterflies!

About 24 hours before the Butterflies hatched you notice that the Chrysalis turn very dark.  If you look closely you will notice speckles of orange  which are the wing colors showing through.  When they finally hatch their wings are crumpled.  The new butterflies will be able to grip the netted cage and climb up the side of the cage to hang.  Butterflies must hang and dry their wings or they will be unable to fly.  After the butterflies hatch they release a red liquid which you can see on the netted cage.  This is just butterfly waste and it eventually goes away.  The Butterflies enjoy being lightly misted with water a few times a day.  To feed them I will place a cotton ball soaked in sugar water. The butterflies need the sugar for energy.

Below is a short video that we made as we caught one of the Butterflies hatching!

Cocoons!!

The caterpillars have now gone into their Chrysalis – or Cocoon stage! When they all formed cocoons they were gently taken out of their containers and placed into this netted cage.  While in this stage, there is a process called “metamorphosis” taking place and this whole process can take about 8-14 days, however since it is quite warm out it may not take quite as long.   The indoor air can be quite dry so it is important to spray the cocoons with a mist of water 1-2 times a day.

See you this Thursday at 2:00 pm for our Zoom meeting – I will show you our cage of Cocoons!

Caterpillar Update!

The caterpillars have grown a lot in the past week.  They started as a tiny egg and now have become grown caterpillars.  They have been eating a special diet consisting of mainly soy and wheat, with added vitamins and minerals which is seen in the bottom of the containers.

There are times when they are very active and times when they are quite still. Since it has been quite warm, the development of the caterpillars has been faster than usual.  Eventually they will hang from the top of the containers in a J-shape, which is a sign that they will form cocoons very soon.  Stay tuned…

Happy Mother’s Day!

It’s been a productive week as we are all getting the hang of meeting twice a week during our Zoom meetings.  It was wonderful to have Ms. Griffiths join us on Thursday – singing with her was a lot of fun!

This Sunday is Mother’s Day – I would like to say Happy Mother’s Day to all the precious mothers. You are all a huge part of your child’s success – thank you for all that you do, all day, every day!!

Next week we will be having a Parent-Teacher Meeting through Zoom.  As communicated this morning, please do not forget to email me with the day and time that will work best for you.  It’s nice to catch up and see how we can support each other through these interesting times!

Caterpillars Have Arrived!

Stay tuned to our Zoom meetings to watch our little friends grow!

“If you desire a wish to come true, you must first capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.  The butterfly will carry your wish to the heavens.  As the butterfly makes no sound, it’s voice  cannot be heard by anyone but the Great Spirit.  Who will grant your wish as a reward for setting the butterfly free to return to him.”A Native American Legend

Children are very excited to watch our Caterpillars grow into beautiful Butterflies.  I will make sure I keep them updated through our zoom meetings as well as through posts on the blog so that they don’t miss a thing!

Off To A Great Start…

It has been quite an interesting time so far – learning how to live virtually!  Thank you for being so accommodating and making this journey a smooth and positive one for both me and the children.

Now that everyone is used to meeting virtually, our Zoom Meeting schedule will be as follows:

Mondays at 10:30 am

Thursdays at 2:00 pm

(it will be the same meeting ID and password each time)

Raz Kids is also all set up for our class, so please feel free to log in at your leisure.  It is a great way to get your children reading and having them read to!

A lot of the children learn how to navigate through the site independently and they also collect points while doing so which makes it more fun and rewarding for them!

Continue to stay positive and most importantly – stay safe, stay healthy!
