Week in the Woods (so far)

| Posted in ADST, Science

So far, we have explored Cameron Park, Maple Grove Park, and several trails at the base of Burnaby Mountain. We learned how to estimate the height of a tree using triangulation with a stick the length of our arms, played some cooperative PE games outdoors, completed a nature scavenger hunt, and worked together to build shelters.

Here are some of the forest shelters we built on Wednesday and some of the learning comments:

“The first time we got it all wrong and we were trying to build things separately and do different jobs. Now I can see we need to work together to build it.”

“The first time we didn’t have the frame quite right. We need to have a triangle with a beam across to make it more stable.”

“It’s really important to build a firepit because that’s where we will stay warm while we’re building the shelters and it’s important to have rocks around the edge so it doesn’t destroy the shelter and spread. And you can have ceremonies by it when the shelter is all finished.”

What did you learn? “Teamwork!”

That is so great!!! I love how they are doing some outdoor learning.

It’s so amazing to see how the kids’ creativity and imagination helps them to experiment, while also learning the value of teamwork. It also takes some bravery to admit things aren’t quite right with a project, and then to find ways to make it better. Great work!
