Term 1 Overview – 2024
Hello!
Here is what the students have been learning this term (until early December)!
Language Arts – Reading – reading short fiction stories and non-fiction articles, making connections and asking and answering comprehension questions about what has been read
Writing – long and short sentences, paragraph writing, note taking and Words Their Way spelling program; using proper punctuation and grammar
Oral Language (speaking) – discussing what has been read, sharing opinions and answering questions orally, A/B partner share and Class Meeting
Math – number patterns, adding and subtracting larger numbers with borrowing and carrying, place value to one million, multiplication (single digit and learning patterns to memorize times tables and some double digit) and division using arrays and fact families, one step equations with variables (i.e. 2 + x = 5)
Science – Solutions and Mixtures Unit – including phases of matter, the effect of temperature on particle movement
Begin Earth Unit (may go into Term 2) – including the rock cycle, local changes caused by the Earth’s axis, rotation and orbit, effects of the relative positions of the sun, moon and Earth including local First Peoples perspectives, local types of earth materials)
Social Studies – Canada unit, the history of the local community and of local First Peoples communities, physiographic features and natural resources of Canada
P.E. – ball skills, group games, volleyball, daily physical activity
P.H.E. (Physical Health Education) – Relationships, Bullying, how to use W.I.T.S. to problem solve (walk away, ignore, talk it out, seek help)
Art – seasonal art activities using Elements of Design with a focus on colour and line
A.D.S.T. (Applied Design, Skills and Technology) – weaving, using materials, tools, and technologies in a safe manner, and with an awareness of the safety of others, in both physical and digital environments; identify the skills required for a task and develop those skills as needed
French – alphabet, numbers, weather, colours, days of the week, and greetings and introductions
Career Education – goal setting strategies, problem-solving and decision-making strategies, emergent leadership skills
