Community

Our little city planners and builders have been learning about important community helpers and services that make up a community.  We took the information we learned and built five different communities. Each group brainstormed what their community needed, collected materials, built it and then they named their community (Ultimate Sand City, Racing Town, Towerson Town, Sugar Dot City, Sparkling Sprinkle Neighborhood Town). They all put in a lot of effort into building their town/city together.  Keep up the great teamwork, Division 12!

Remembrance Day

In discussions about Remembrance Day, we talked about what peace means to each of us. We talked about how lucky we are to live in a country such as Canada. Students were asked to reflect on what they are grateful for in their lives.

We had a virtual school assembly today. We stood and paused for a moment of silence to honour and remember the men and women who have served and continue to serve Canada in times of conflict and peace.

During the assembly, two of our students brought our class wreath to the gym, as part of the wreath ceremony. We created our poppies by stamping red paint with a heart shaped sponge, and then adding buttons!

Terry Fox Run

Welcome to Division 12’s class blog! Our first month of school has flown by, and our new kindergartners have settled nicely into their routines.

Last week, we participated in the school Terry Fox Run! After our virtual Terry Fox school assembly, we did some stretching, and then went outside to run some laps on our field.

Thanks to students, families, and friends for supporting our Terry Fox fundraising efforts this year. It was a fun day!

Bug Community

Our class has been learning about important community helpers and services that make up a community.  We took the information we learned and built five different communities for some lucky bugs! Each group brainstormed what their community needed, collected materials, built it and then they named their community.  These lucky bugs can choose to live in Bugland, Bug Town, Bug City, Winch Street Town or Fun Town!

Please log in to your child’s Blogfolio to see their community!

Hatching Chicks!

We have been learning about chicks and oviparous animals (e.g. animals that lay eggs) this term. With Ms. Gourlay’s class, we hatched some eggs!  We had three eggs in an incubator and we looked through a special scope that allows us to see inside the egg.  Students completed a Science journal, where they made predictions and recorded their observations.

Photos of individual students will be uploaded to their blogfolios for Term 3.

Polar Bear Experiments

We have been learning about polar bears with Ms. Gourlay’s K/1 class.  We learned that polar bears are the biggest carnivores on land.  Polar bears have 3 to 4 inches of blubber (fat) underneath their skin – this helps to keep them warm, and increases their buoyancy when they swim in the icy water.

This is the experiment we did.  In one hand, students held an ice cube.  In the other hand, they held 4 inches of fat (shortening) with an ice cube on top, like a polar bear!  Which hand was warmer?

We also learned that polar bears only appear to be white, when in fact, their fur is transparent.  Their skin is actually black!  Black helps to absorb the heat of the sun, which keeps them warm. Placing their hands on the black and white bear cut-outs, students were asked, which color felt warmer?

Please see your child’s blogfolio for individual photos of the ice cube experiment.  Ask your child to tell you what they have discovered.  We encourage parents to make comments in your child’s blogfolio posts, and you can also type out what your child says about polar bears.

Thanks to Ms. Gourlay for inviting us into her classroom!
