Float or Sink?

The children are scientists, and as scientists, we know what to do:

  • Ask a question
  • Form a hypothesis
  • Test the hypothesis
  • Record observations
  • Come to a conclusion

We wondered if a coconut would sink or float in the water?  Here is our experiment:

Ask me why a coconut floats

The children were surprised to learn that all of these foods are grown in the rainforest.

In science, one of the curricular competencies expects that the students are able to make exploratory observations using their senses.  This time the children used their sense of taste.

We decided to conduct an experiment and try something new – we ate papaya and drank coconut milk.  Some of us were not sure if we would like them . . . but as scientists, we knew that we had to be brave.

Ask me if I liked them.

The Color Monster

We have been learning the vocabulary that helps us to recognize, share and manage our feelings and emotions.  This is an important aspect of the Personal Awareness and Responsibility core competency.

Today we read a wonderful story called The Color Monster by Anna llenas.  This story is about a little monster who is confused by his mixed-up emotions.  He feels angry, happy, calm, sad and scared all at once!  To help him, a little girl shows him what each feeling means through color: Yellow is happiness, Blue is sadness, Red is anger, Grey is fear, Green is calm and Pink is love.   The monster learns to identify his emotions and practice self-regulation.
