Our Program:
Reading: Students will learn and practice 5 Reading strategies called “Reading Powers”: Questioning, Connecting, Inferring, Visualizing, and Transforming) that all good readers do. I want them to demonstrate deeper understanding and become critical thinkers. Short stories, novel studies, and literature circles will be utilized this year. I have a room full of avid readers who look forward to Silent Reading time and time to read for early finishers of work assigned. Please encourage your child to read a variety of reading material outside of their school work, too. This helps students build a greater vocabulary as well as see written language structures and literary devices (writing tools) that author’s utilize to engage their readers.
“Paint a picture with words!” This is something my students hear me say a lot! Students are learning how to wow their readers by utilizing several literary devices such as:
- similes
- metaphors
- onomatopoeia
- alliteration
- personification
Students will gain confidence in their oral ability by performing drama games, role playing, and doing Reader’s Theatre. Tribes games which are often drama based will also help build community and trust. Tribes is a program that many teacher’s here at Clinton have used in some capacity in their rooms. Tribes helps children learn cooperative and social skills while developing a healthy and positive self-concept.
