Museum of Anthropology

Dear Parents and Students,

We had a fabulous day at the Museum of Anthropology.  The children reinforced their knowledge about Potlatches and got to hold and learn about special ceremonial regalia doing presentations about them and sketched carvings and learned about the different realms.  They enjoyed exploring the whole museum, discovering beautiful and interesting artifacts held in deep drawers and looking at ancient totem poles and magnificent mask and canoe carvings, traditional clothing, blankets, jewelry, sculptures, dishes, statues etc. not just from the aboriginals in Canada, but from every continent in the world.  What a day!  We thank our parent volunteers for accompanying us that day and for all your support making this field trip happen.  Here are some photos we would like to share!

It’s Astonishing! It’s April Already!

Hello Everybody,

March seemed like a blip in the school year, having had two weeks off for spring break.  The boys and girls are continuing on in 3rd term, knowing the routines so well by now.  I will include some photos taken before the holidays.

Track season has started and I am thrilled that the majority of my class were interested in joining.  They have been training well and have learned to pass a baton and sprint and run longer distances.  Thanks to parent volunteers all students were able to attend our first after school track meet.  What a fun time it was!images

Division 5 was introduced to, “The Greatest Love of All” by Whitney Houston, the song they will be performing in May.  It has such an important and beautiful message.  Boys and Girls, please practice!  Don’t forget to think about what you will be wearing! ; )

Aboriginal Studies

We have been learning about Aboriginal Culture with a focus on the Inuit of Northern Canada.  In December, Div. 5 did an impressive job drawing and using bright colors (oil pastels) used in the style of the famous artist Ted Harrison.  They replicated some of his most famous works.  We have had many compliments on our bulletin board! : P  What artists!  Please check out the Gallery page above to see these beautiful pictures!IMG_5378

At the moment the boys and girls are working on a Stop Motion movie. There job is to create a short Stopmotion movie based on one of the 7 Sacred Teachings from the Aboriginal Culture and to tie in one of the Aboriginal World Perspectives.  Boys and Girls could you tell me which teaching you had and give us a sneak peak on what your movie will be about? It has been great to see you all working well in your groups and watching the whole process.

Winter Wonderland

On Friday, January 15 Division 5 had an amazing time entering a “Winter Wonderland”.  Snowshoeing was hard work, but fun.  Boys and Girls, what did our guide Phil teach you during out trek through the snow?  What things did you see on our adventure and what was your favourite thing up on Grouse Mountain?  I am very proud of all of you and I didn’t hear anyone tell me they were tired while snowshoeing! Here are some pictures of our day! Click on the snowflakes!snowf

Visiting the Aquarium

What a day we had last Friday exploring the Vancouver Aquarium.  It was awesome to get up close to all the interesting creatures in the exhibits.  Hope you all learned some new and interesting facts when visiting each exhibit.  We will be learning about the Inuit and the Arctic and in Science we learned about bioluminescence.  Did you see any creatures who had that adaptation?  The 4D show was fabulous…even if we got squirted in our faces!  LOL!  Tell me something you liked or learned about at the Aquarium!  What was your favourite thing?  I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED gazing at the jellyfish!IMG_4614

Here are some photos I took (click on the photo).  If you have any you want to share with the class please put them on a usb and I will add them!

Fort Langley Fun!

What a great field trip we had!  The warm sunny day made it a great day to be outside to do our Aboriginals at Fort Langley Challenge.  It was really great seeing the students working as a team to accomplish tasks and learning in such a fun way.  What were some challenges you had to do?  What were some interesting things you learned?  Photos

Yukon Dan Was Here!

IMG_0726Boys and Girls,

Wasn’t that a fun afternoon with Yukon Dan?  Did you like the cool hands on activities he prepared?  That was so nice of him to put warm water in the containers for us to gold pan in!  Tell me something you learned from Yukon Dan about Gold and the Gold Rush.  I found him very interesting!  What about you?  I plan on going to Yale this summer to join the gold panning competition on either Aug. 21 or the 22. It would be fantastic to find some gold!  I know some of you are already planning on going and saving the date!  I will see you there!

The pictures and videos of our visit with Yukon Dan are uploaded.

Britannia Mine Museum

Hi Everyone!  Didn’t we have the best time on our field trip to Britannia Mine Museum?  It truly was one of my favorites I have ever been on.  It was so nice to see you all so excited when you were searching for gold and other hidden gems in the gravel.  We got a glimpse of how addicting it most likely was for the prospectors to keep  searching for the big strike.  Boys & girls, what were some of the highlights of this trip?  What did you learn?  Invite your parents to share the pictures and tell them about your trip!IMG_2136
