English 8:

Read Ch 4 in The Outsiders together as a class.

Read Ch 5, 6 and 7 in The Outsiders on your own. *** there will be a reading quiz at the start of class Fri on Ch 5, 6 and 7 so please ensure you have completed the readings ***

English 11FP:

  • note taking c’ont on themes and topics related to Indigenous literature
  • read “Take Us To Your Chief” (p. 136 – 146) in your short story text book; if you missed today’s class, ensure you read this story before next day so you don’t fall behind in the class

English 12: 

  • finish reading “The Painted Door” together as a class; discuss
  • analysis sheet
  • note taking: lit to film compare criteria for assignment next day

October 3, 2023 – Day 2

English 12: 

  • finish reading “The Painted Door” together as a class (p. 238-244)
  • analysis sheet
  • note taking for lit to film compare we will be doing in class on Thurs.

English 8:

  • Ch 2 questions collected at the start of class from students who took the sheet home for homework
  • Read Ch 3 and 4 in The Outsiders
  • HOMEWORK: Read Ch 5-7 (p. 68-118) for next day. There will be a reading quiz at the start of class Thursday so please ensure you have done the readings!

English 11FP:

  • Stories of Who I Am presentations in class today – presentation of 4 artifacts in small groups then presentation of 1 artifact in class sharing circle

September 29, 2023 – Day 1

Orange Shirt Day – thank you to those students who wore orange today in support of the survivors of Canada’s residential school system and for truth and reconciliation in our country.

English 8:

  • Ch 2 questions collected at the start of class for those people who took them home for homework
  • spelling quiz at the beginning of class
  • silent reading
  • read Ch 3 in The Outsiders
  • GoCard distribution at the end of the period

English 11FP:

  • Stories of Who I Am – presentation of your four artifacts in small groups and of one item in our first class sharing circle

English 12:

  • pre-reading group discussion activity
  • begin reading “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross (p. 366 – to half way through p. 379) – you do NOT have to finish the whole story but please ensure you’ve read up to this point. We will pick the story up together as a class on Weds.

September 28, 2023 – Day 2

English 12: 

  • pre-reading group discussion activity
  • macrocosm vs microcosm
  • start reading “The Painted Door” by Sinclair Ross (p. 225- to the bottom of p. 237) *** we will finish the story together as a class next day but you need to have read to the bottom of p. 237 to stay on track w the class**

English 8: 

  • finish reading Ch 2 in The Outsiders
  • Ch 2 worksheet – if this isn’t completed in class today, students need to finish it at home and bring it with them to the next class on Tues, Oct 3rd. September 27, 2023 – Day 1 (TOC)

Thank you to Ms. Penner for coming in as a TTOC for my classes on Sept 27/23. She said all my classes were lovely; that’s fabulous to hear! 🙂

English 8:

  • finish reading Ch 2 in The Outsiders
  • Chapter 2 worksheet – students were given remaining class time to work on this sheet; if students didn’t finish, they took it home for homework and it’s due at the start of Friday’s class
  • reminder: spelling quiz at the start of class Fri! Don’t forget to study your words.

English 11FP:

  • class time to work on Prompt # 1:How are girls treated differently from boys in your family? Write about how it feels from your identity perspective to watch how the other gender is treated.

    If you perceive no difference, why do you think that’s how your family is?

    and #2:You have three years to achieve full-fledged mastery in something. Write about the skill you choose, and how you’d go about it.

    HINT: Focus on detail in each step to your achievement over the three-year period.

Offer your response in a paragraph with reference to the story.

September 21, 2023 – Day 2

English 12: 

Analysis assignment for “Invitations”:

Part A: The central character rationalizes her initial acceptance and subsequent rejection of each invitation. In chart form, identify and plot her reasons for accepting each invitation, followed by her reasons for rejecting each.

Part B: What generality can be drawn about the influences that appear to be the motivation for her decisions?

Hand out portfolios and organize “Table of Contents”.

Work time to complete/add to analysis from last day for “The Lottery”.

English 8:

Ch 1 Outsiders questions collected at the start of class. If you forgot to hand these in to me today, please do so before next class.

Review criteria sheet for “Stories of Who I Am” assignment (due in class on Oct 3/23).

Overview for Equinox + Solstice year long photo essay project.

15 mins outdoor exploration to source first two photos for the photo essay – 1) the end/death of summer and 2) the beginning/birth of fall. Select your best photo for each and email to me at shelley.dube@burnabyschools.ca by 5pm today to avoid late marks.

Remaining class time to edit images, select and email to me.

September 20, 2023 – Day 1

English 8:

English 11FP:

Hand out criteria for “Stories of Who I Am” assignment (due Sept 29).

Review criteria for Equinox + Solstice year long project.

Outdoor exploration (15 mins) to get photos for project. Your two photos you will use for your project must be emailed to me (shelley.dube@burnabyschools.ca) by 5pm today to avoid late marks.

Read “Invitations” by Carol Shields (p. 174).

Complete analysis sheet together as a class.

September 19, 2023 – Day 2

English 12:

English 8:

  • finish reading Ch 1 in The Outsiders
  • Ch 1 comprehension and analysis questions (due at the start of class Thurs): ** answer in full sentences **
  • 1) What do you know about Ponyboy, Sodapop and Darry? Make a list for each character’s traits and qualities.
  • 2) Who are the Socs? Who are the Greasers?
  • 3) How do Ponyboy’s relationships with Darry and Sodapop differ? Explain.
  • 4) Why is the gang important to Johnny?
  • 5) How does Ponyboy react to what Sodapop tells him about Darry?
  • 6) What does Ponyboy mean on page 18 when he says, “I lie to myself all the time”? Do you ever lie to yourself? Why or why not?
  • we will be writing Letters to Self on Thursday! If you would like to bring special pens for your letter or stickers etc, please bring to class Thurs.

English 11FP:
