December 19, 2023 – Day 1

English 8:

Review properly indenting, spacing and punctuating dialogue in your writing.

Work block for “My Very Bad Day” short story projects. The complete package is due at the start of class Thurs.

English 11FP:

Finish watching “Indian Horse” on Netflix and adding to notes for in-class composition which will happen Thurs. Don’t forget to bring your notes to class with you next day.

Winter solstice: photo essay walk. Students take TWO photos on their phones – 1) needs to represent the end of fall/autumn and 2) needs to represent the beginning of winter to you.

Students are welcome to use filters/touch up their photos as you wish. Both photos must be emailed to me: shelley.dube@burnabyschools.ca. Your subject line needs to be: Eng 11FP Pd 2 Winter Solstice Photos – Your first initial and your LAST name. If you missed today’s class, please take these photos and email me ASAP.

English 12:

Part 1-3 Analysis Questions (due Thurs):

1) Find and list at least TEN descriptions of the setting on p. 1-6. (6 marks)

2) How can someone be alone but not lonely? (2 marks)

3) In paragraph format, write your sense of both Franklin and Eldon at this early part of the novel. Do you see similarities between them or only differences? (3 marks)

December 18, 2023 – Day 2

English 12: 

Work block for final Othello “Search Engine” project (character study x 2). This assignment is due at the start of class Weds, Dec 20th.

Please bring your Othello text with you to class Wednesday for collection.

English 8:

WORK BLOCK: students have the whole class to work on their “My Very Bad Day” short story project.

The full project is due at the start of class Weds, Dec 20th.

English 11FP:

Finish watching “Indian Horse” and note taking for in-class composition next week. If you missed today’s class, please find the film on Netflix and finish watching it while taking your notes. The in-class composition will take place on Weds, Dec 20th.

December 15, 2023 – Day 1

English 8:

Spelling quiz at the start of class.

WORK BLOCK: students have the remainder of the class to work on their “My Very Bad Day” short story project. There will also be another work block on Tuesday; students can bring laptops/tablets if they want to work on those. Project is due at the start of class Thurs (Dec 21).

English 11FP:

Continue watching “Indian Horse” and note taking for in-class composition next week. If you missed today’s class, please find the film on Netflix and watch to the 1 hour, 31 min mark. We will finish the last 10 mins of the film at the start of Tuesday’s class. The in-class composition will take place on Thurs (Dec 21).

English 12:

December 14, 2023 – Day 2

English 12:

Collect Act 5 review sheets.

In addition to the remaining time in today’s class, you will be given the entire period on Monday, Dec 19 to work on this project. You are welcome to bring your laptop to work on, if you wish. Completing this assignment by hand is also acceptable.

Each search must include an indication of the Act and Scene in your title where you would place this character making the search (and it must be obvious to me the correlation to the play at that point). Example of a title: Iago, Act 5, Sc 2.

English 8:

Work block for “My Very Bad Day” short story writing assignment. Students will also have a work block on Monday to ensure they are dedicating solid effort into this final assignment for our unit on HKL.

English 11FP:

Note taking for composition assignment next week:

While we watch the film in class, you are responsible for taking notes on various aspects of the film. After we have finished the film, you will be writing an in class composition comparing the film and the text next week. The notes you take while watching the film will be ESSENTIAL to achieving well on the composition.

Similarities:

  1. Note aspects where the film stays true to the text.
  2. Provide THREE examples of this.

Differences:

  1. Note aspects where the film takes liberties and changes, adds or removes scenes from the text.
  2. Provide THREE examples of this.
  3. Explain WHY you think the director has chosen to change/add/remove these scenes.

Review:

  • Which did you prefer – the text or the film? Explain your reasons why.

Begin watching the film, “Indian Horse.” If you missed today’s class, you can find this film on Netflix. Please watch 30 minutes of the movie only and ensure you begin your note taking. We will finish the film in class on Monday; we will pick up at the 31 minute mark on Monday.

December 13, 2023 – Day 1

English 8:

Class time provided for students to complete all journals for HKL, including #9 from last class.

Collect novels and update book cards.

Students will be given time in class on Fri (Dec 15) AND Tues (Dec 19) to work on their planning, to begin their rough draft of their composition and to edit/polish to write their good copy. The good copy of this piece is due on Thurs, Dec 21. The planning sheet, and rough copies (with evidence of editing) must be handed in with the good copy. If students would like to bring their laptops to do their drafting and good copy, they are welcome to bring them to class on the 15th and the 19th.

Remember to study your spelling words. Quiz at the start of class Fri.

English 11FP:

December 8, 2023 – Day 2

English 12: 

Read Act 5, Scene 1 in Othello.

Speech writing assignment (for portfolio):

Roderigo has evidently agreed to Iago’s urging to kill Cassio so he can still pursue Desdemona. If you could step into his path and say something, anything, to Roderigo at this point, what would it be?

Write a speech of 150-200 words that you would give to Roderigo in this instance. This piece will go into your portfolio for Term 2 so please ensure you add it to your Table of Contents. Your speech should convey your understanding of the general plot line of the play plus the nuances of the characters in the play.

English 8:

Time to start working on Journal #9 (p. 213-243) which is the final journal for this novel study! Students do NOT have to complete Journal #9 for homework; they will be given class time on Tuesday to get this done. Please ensure you bring your novels to class Tuesday so they can be collected.

Journal Reflection #2 assignment  covering ONLY Ch 32 – 40 in the novel. All 7 questions must be addressed and this goes into your portfolio for Term 2.  If you missed today’s class, these are the prompt questions for your analysis of Ch 32-40 in the novel:

All prompts should be answered using FULL sentences except for #4 which needs to be a narrative PARAGRAPH (8-12 sentences).

1 How has the plot advanced?

2 Were there any new characters introduced? Describe them in detail including names, physical descriptions and personality traits (if known).

3 Find at LEAST one word that was either new to you or that you found unique in this section. Copy out the word (with page # citation) and its proper definition as it relates to the context of the story. If there were many words that were new or unique to you, make a list of them and write out the correct definitions.

4 What are you able to connect with personally in this section of the text? Write a narrative paragraph (10-12 sentences) making personal connections you make to the text from experiences in your own life.

5 What do you think will happen in the next section?

6 What do you hope will happen next in the story?

7 Considering the list of 21 themes and topics being used for our First Peoples’ course, choose at LEAST three themes/topics you feel apply to this section of the text and give reasons for why you chose them.

Read Ch 36-40 in Indian Horse together as a class.

Grammar sheet #2 (assignment mark – 10 mins timed). If you missed today’s class, I only have this as a hard copy so remind me on Thurs so you can. make this up then.

English 8:

Check Journal #7 at the start of class.

English 11FP:

Ch 28-31 reading quiz at the start of class. If you missed today’s class, providing your absence has been officially excused by a parent/guardian, you can write an alternate Ch 28-31 reading quiz upon your return.

Ch 23-31 review questions: complete each question in a paragraph response.

1) What does being on the Manitouwadge Moose hockey team mean to Saul? How does he become connected to the other players? Why do they make him prove himself?

2) Discuss the experience of the team in the café in Chapleau. How are the boys treated? Why does this happen? What do you think it would be like to experience this kind of racism?

HOMEWORK: read Ch 32-35 before the next class on Friday.
