November 3, 2023 – Day 1

English 8: 9:10-10:05am

Spelling quiz at the start of class.

Students have this entire block to work on their Journal #1 (p. 1-25) for HKL. If they do not finish in class time, they must complete it for homework and have it ready to show me at the start of class Tuesday.

English 11FP: 10:20-11:15am

Read “Two Sisters” by Pauline Johnson; if you missed today’s class, please source a copy of this story/legend on line to read.

Analysis questions (to be completed in full sentences):

1) Find two examples of similes from the text and write them out.

2) Why are women so revered in the Tyee culture?

3) Who were the  Tyee at war with?

4) What did the daughters ask for for their birthday?

5) Why did Sagalie Tyee decide to make the chief’s daughters immortal?

REMINDER: Side by Side Portrait assignment due Tues, Nov 7th.

Read Act I, Sc i & ii in Othello.

Paragraph response assignment (due Tues, Nov 7): What are your views on elopement? Why do people choose to elope? What seems to be Desdemona’s reasons for doing so? How would modern day views of this topic differ from Elizabethan views?

November 2, 2023 – Day 2

English 12: 

Literacy 12 graduation assessment in B119.

English 8:

Add criteria points to journal prompt notes we took on Tuesday.

Class time to work on Journal #1 (p. 1-25). If students did not finish in class time, they must complete Journal #1 for homework and have it done for the beginning of class Monday.

English 11FP: 

Read Ch 3-5 in Indian Horse (IH).

Side by Side Portrait Assignment (due Weds, Nov 8):

1) Draw a family portrait of Saul together with his parents and Benjamin.

2) Draw a family portrait of Saul with his parents after Benjamin was taken.

3) Make a list outlining the key differences between the two portraits; your list must contain 4-8 points of differences.

November 1, 2023 – Day 1

English 8:

Silent reading.

Add extra criteria to reader’s response journal prompts in our portfolios.

Read p. 17-25 in HKL (the novel).

Class time to work on Reader’s Response Journal #1.

Collect legend writing assignments from Monday’s class.

Read Ch 3, 4 & 5 in Indian Horse (IH).

Portfolio formatting for “Reader’s Reflection Journals” that we will be using throughout our new novel study on The Reluctant Journal of Henry K Larsen:

As we read through the novel, you will keep a reader’s response journal. You will need to make an entry for every twenty pages (or so) that we read in the book. Your journal entries will be kept in your creative writing portfolio.

You need to address the following questions in your journal (if you missed today’s class, please copy the following prompts onto a piece of paper and we’ll staple it into your portfolio on Thurs):

1) How has the plot advanced?

2) Were there any new characters introduced? Describe them.

3) Was there any vocabulary that was new to you in this section?

4) Did the story remind you of anything? Can you make personal connections to the text from experiences in your own life?

5) What do you think will happen in the next section?

6)What do you hope will happen next in the story?

7)Was your prediction correct from your last entry?

8)Do you have any questions about what you’ve read in this section?

Hand our novels and update book cards.

Legend writing assignment (due at the start of class Thurs):

Write the legend of how your family’s name came to be (inspired by Saul’s explanation of the name Indian Horse in Ch 2). This can be entirely fictionalized (made up). Remember that legends typically involve animals and/or spirits.

250-300 words.

REMINDER: THIS CLASS WILL BE WRITING THE LITERACY 12 ASSESSMENT ON WEDS, NOV 1 BEGINNING AT 12:20PM IN B119. Please bring a pencil and ensure you have photo ID (your Go Card works great for this). Typically this exam takes 2 hours to complete; however, you can have 3 hours in total if you need it.

October 27, 2023 – Day 2

English 12:

Hand out copies of Othello and update book cards.

Intro lesson: The Time of Shakespeare.

  1. What do you remember about your first day of Kindergarten? Focus on descriptive writing. Tell me about what outfit you wore, how you felt leaving your parent(s), what you thought about your new teacher and their classroom, your thoughts on the other kids in your class, the playground etc.
  2. Tell me about a time when you were bullied OR when you were a bully. Be as descriptive as possible to tell me about the situation and how it felt to be bullied or to be the bully.
