Poetry terms quiz at the start of class. If you missed today’s class and your absence is excused, email me ASAP to arrange a time to make up an alternate quiz. If your absence was not excused, you have earned a zero for this assessment.

Note taking: poetry formats. If you missed today’s class, copy these down for reference in your book:

  1. Acrostic Poetry:

Think of ADJECTIVES to describe yourself using your first and last name then assemble them in an acrostic format

      • EXAMPLE:
      • Z any
      • O utrageous
      • E nergetic

2. Haiku

An unrhymed, Japanese style of poem with only three lines and a specific, seventeen syllable pattern.

An old silent pond

From leaf to leaf hops a frog

Looking for a meal

FORMULA:   Line 1: 5 syllables

Line 2: 7 syllables

Line 3: 5 syllables

3. Cinquain

A five-line poem with a specific formula:

Line 1: Subject

Line 2: TWO words describing your subject

Line 3: THREE “ing” words about what the subject does

Line 4: ONE sentence about the subject

Line 5: Another name for your subject

Remaining class time to finish spring concrete poems from Monday’s class. Collected at the end of class.
