November 19, 2025 – Day 1

English 9 (Pd 1 & 3):

Full draft of BOTH short stories due by the end of today’s class.

Students are encouraged to proofread these drafts before handing in if they have time in today’s class.

If done all of the above, silent reading until the end of the period.

CW 12 (Pd 2):

Read Gloria Sawai’s short story, “The Day I Sat With Jesus…”. If you missed today’s class, I will put a copy of the story into your folder for you to read when you’re back. Alternatively, you can find a pdf of it online and read it there.

Journal response (for portfolio): min 2 paragraphs

Gloria Sawai’s short story is famous for pushing boundaries and was considered avant garde for 1976. While it is well regarded as an example of the magic realism genre of short fiction, some critics dismissed it as offensive drivel.

Largely though, this story is seen as a funny, philosophical exploration of faith and belief set against a backdrop of the utterly mundane.

  • What do you like about her story? Why are you, as a reader, attracted to these aspects of her writing?
  • What do you dislike about her story? Why do you dislike these things? Are you offended? Bored? Confused?
  • As a writer, is there anything about Sawai’s narrative or writing style that inspires you? If so, how do you think you can incorporate some of this muse into your current short story?

Remaining class time to work on short story drafting.

Check point #2 at the end of today’s class: students must have 1500 words of their draft done to receive a mark for this point.

English 11CW (Pd 4):

Review p. 71-103 in TJP together as a class to ensure understanding of plot and character development.

Read article on Wayson Choy and complete comprehension questions and found poem (for portfolio).
