October 1, 2025 – Day 1

English 9 (Pd 1 & 3):

  • silent reading
  • analysis sheet for “No Renewal”
  • review criteria for ‘Ancient Trunk’ project (due Oct 7th):

CREATE YOUR OWN ANCIENT TRUNK:

Like Douglas in the short story, “No Renewal” by Spider Robinson, you are going to create your own ancient trunk. You can use a shoe box, an Amazon box or another container you think would work well for this project.

Consider including regular day to day items you use in your life, items that are special to you or your family, news headlines, photographs etc. Essentially, you are creating a time capsule, of sorts, to show people living 100 years from now what life was like in 2025.

Your trunk should contain between 6 (DEV)to12 items.

You will be presenting your trunk and its items to the class in a sharing circle in class on Tuesday, Oct 7/25. You should be prepared to explain what each of your items is and why you felt they should be included in your ancient trunk.

  • grammar worksheet on run on and fragmented sentences; if you missed today’s class, I only have this as a hard copy so please ask me for this when you return to school.

CW 12 (Pd 2):

  • Gr 12 students are reminded of the MANDATORY meeting in the MPR tomorrow (Oct 2) during flex time.
  • set up Table of Contents for journal prompts in portfolios:
  • Journal writes will happen randomly and are meant to go into your portfolio as working documents (drafts) only. There is no need to type out journal prompts. The hope is that journal prompts help with getting you writing and they might even become the basis of a future piece if you’re stuck for inspo.
  • You are expected to write continuously for 10 mins with each new journal prompt. Even if you stray from the topic, don’t stop writing! This is early “stream of consciousness” writing and it can be a great tool in helping one get over the dreaded writer’s block.
  • If you miss a class where there was a journal prompt, it’s your responsibility to check the homework site, complete the 10 min write at home and add it back into your portfolio. Journal prompts are graded once per term for completion, effort and variety.
  • JOURNAL #1: We’ve flipped the calendar today. Tell me all about October.
  • Remaining class time to work on memoirs (good copy and all drafting due at the start of class Oct 7th); students will have access to the computer lab during Friday’s class if you need to type/print your memoir.

English 11CW (Pd 4):

  • silent reading
  • read “The Firing Squad” (p. 69); students need to finish reading this story and complete the analysis sheet in full before the start of Friday’s class.
  • The final exam for the short story unit is on Monday, Oct 20th. There will be a review class on Oct 16th.
