Good morning Division 7!
What a beautiful blue sky to wake up to with the ground still wet from the rain. It reminds me of a story my dad shared yesterday. He explained how when we first arrived in Canada (May 9, 1996), we would always wake up with the streets still a little wet and the skies blue. My parents thought that people came and washed the streets early every morning! They were so impressed at the level of cleanliness that was apparent in Canada. Of course, they later realized it was the magic of Vancouver rain in the spring.

a.) Morning Journal
As you all know very well, I spend a lot of time in the forests running on the trails or hiking. I have been noticing so much growth in the forests over the past couple months. Every now and then I take a picture in hopes of sharing my findings with you all (though I haven’t quite been able to as much as I would like these days). I thought maybe Tuesdays would be a good day to share some of my findings!
Today’s plant: Pacific Trillium
I took this photo on Burnaby Mountain a couple weeks ago.
I have been noticing this wild flower a lot more this year. The trillium is the provincial flower of Ontario but we have a type that grows out here in BC too. It grows in the forest, at the foot of the tall evergreen trees. I often spot them along the edges of the trails (though still not too common!) It is quite special and often known as the flower that no one should ever pick! It is actually illegal in BC (and many other provinces) to pick trillium! The reason for that is because the flowers are very slow growing. If you pick a trillium, it may or may not grow back. If it does grow back, the flowers itself will take up to 15 years to start blooming again!
It is a native plant to BC and I have been told that there are medicinal uses for the plants (using the leaves and root).
Morning Journal question:
Why is it important to stay on trails provided while out in the forests/natural environment? What are some steps you can take to ensure you are being careful?
b.) Literacy – Mother’s Day
(Moms – please try your best to avoid viewing this document! 😀)
You may work at your own pace or follow my suggestions.
I suggest working on the writing stage today.
Please view this file: MOMS DONT LOOK – Mothers Day Template
If the file above does not open, try this file: PDF MOMS DONT LOOK – Mothers Day Template
c.) Math
Please continue your math program.
Khan Academy, IXL, worksheets, etc.
If you would like support/guidance on a math program, please contact me.
d.) Reading
Read for at least 20 mins.
If you would like to activate your thinking even more while you read, I suggest following one of these roles:
- Connector: What does this part of the book remind you of? It can be connection to yourself, others, the world, or other text (books, movies, plays, stories, song, etc).
- Sketch Artist: Visualize — draw what you read using clues from the reading.
- Vocabulary Seeker: What words are interesting? What words are new to you? Find them in the dictionary.
Additionally, consider listening to an audiobook as well.
Try Audible (free online) or Libby (access local public library audiobooks). I am currently using and loving Libby!
Extension Activities (optional)
e.) Genius Hour (optional)
Continue your Genius Hour project from last week. If you have completed it or are just starting, here is the planning sheet to start a new inquiry:Genius Hour Planning Sheet
Follow these steps:
Brainstorm – what topics interest you? Write down topics that interest you (e.g. birds, palm trees, global warming, Jupiter, etc…). Select one to focus on this week.
Question – What deep questions do you wish to explore on your topic? (e.g. how do birds fly?)
Research – How are you going to find answers to your questions? With limited variety of resources, it will likely be online or an interview with an “expert” on the topic (perhaps family/friends).
Present – How are you going to share your knowledge? Please come up with a a way to briefly present your project. This may be through a speech, slideshow, poster, poem, comic, video, song, etc.
Share – Practice your presentation and share — either to me, family/friends, to the class during Sharing Circle.
Please follow the following planning sheet to guide you through your planning and research.
f.) Makers – Boat (optional)
Please refer to the following document: Makers – Boat
This will also be available on Microsoft Teams.
Please take a picture with a description and send it to me or share it during sharing circle.
Have a good Tuesday,
Ms. Daneshwand
I think the pacific trillium is a very beautiful flower 🌷. I wonder why it takes that long to grow back in 15 years is a longgggg time.
It is important to stay on the trails because if you go off the trail it could be dangerous. Or there could be wild animals (who do not want to be disturbed) that are off the trail and might attack you.
Something you can do to be careful is watch wear you step/keep an eye on the trail
It is important to stay on the main track when hiking because you might see a short cut and get lost in the forest. Another reason why we should stay on the trail is because we want to protect natural plants. You can be safe by not taking short cut even if it is tempting. Bring a safety kits in case if you get hurt. Thank you.
You have to stay on trails where everyone is or you could get lost. Make sure you are always on the trails and at some trails people put pink tissues on some trees to say “its safe to come here”.
I think we need to stay on the trails because we have to be careful about the plants and animals home .Especially spring because most animals have babies in spring. The plants we do not want to squish them.
I think the forest 🌳 needs to be taken care of like your home 🏡 and your room. The trillium is a very beautiful flower 🌺. I wonder how many trees 🌲 are in Central Park or by a trail in the woods on gravel in nature. It’s important to not litter or start fires🔥 in nature.
We should be care full were we are stepping but it does’t mean we cant go for walks or go in nature it just means we need to be more care full wear we are and wear we are stepping. we just need to be care full with nature.
i think we should go on trails because people have to clear plants to make that that trail and animals homes.
It is very important to stay on the trail because it you don’t walk on the trail you can get lost and if you pick the Trillium 🌺because you think that the trillium is SO beautiful you don’t know that you can’t pick it you could get in trouble if someone saw you holding it 😊

it is important to stay on the trails just because we might not look what we are stepping on
