May 26th – 5th round of activities (BAND)

    1. Complete any outstanding assignments in SmartMusic (deadline June 1st).
    2. Create a medley out of your favourite bits of music that you’ve learned on your instrument this year. You might want to consider using a program like iMovie or an audio editing tool to piece together lots of recordings of you playing, though one recording of you playing each piece one after another is fine as long as the transitions between each piece aren’t too long.
    3. Create a duet by recording yourself playing one part then record yourself playing along to that part in harmony. You can pick one of the duet pieces in Essential Elements or compose your own accompanying line to work in harmony with a single-line piece in Essential Elements.
    4. Pick a favourite character from a film/TV show or book. Compose a theme tune for that character using your instrument. It should be a tune that represents the personality and story of the character. Submit a write-up of the character and how your composition represents the character, with a notation or recording of your composition if possible.
    5. Complete any previously posted activities that you have not yet done.

    How to submit work

Please submit work through one of the following three methods:

    1. Comment on any of the blog posts (if comments are to show on the blog site I have to ‘approve’ them, so I can just not approve your comment and view the work at my end).

    3. For large file submissions add them to Google Drive and invite Mr. Clift through the ‘share’ option.

Apr 28th – 3rd Round of Activities (Band)

    1. Study and complete all assignments in SmartMusic.
    2. Study and practice every activity in Essential Elements from #107-118.
    3. Pick a favourite melody (think of favourite songs, movie/video game soundtracks etc). Figure out how to play the melody on your instrument. This can be done by ear, or with any resources you can find online. Submit a recording of yourself playing this melody.
    4. Compose a short melody to represent the thoughts and feelings you have experienced during this period of isolation. Write about the experience of composing this melody and how it connects to your experiences. If possible notate your melody and submit a recording of you playing it.
    5. Contribute to the “Ayre” MIDI project in SoundTrap by programming some of your instrument’s part.

Apr 14th – 2nd round of activities (Band)

    1. Explore SmartMusic using the invitation that was sent by Mr. Clift. Submit to Mr. Clift a recording of yourself using SmartMusic to the best of your ability, or write about your experience as a first-time user of SmartMusic.
    2. Go outside, close your eyes, and listen. Think about what sounds you can hear. Then see if you can either recreate one of the sounds using your instrument, or make a short composition to make a representation of something that you heard (e.g. the life of a bird that you heard). Record and submit your composition.
    3. Take one of the exercises from Essential Elements that you know well. Transpose the song by starting on a different note and playing the melody using all the same note intervals as in the original exercise. Submit a recording of yourself playing your transposed version.

Term 3 beginner activities for BAND

Here are three activities that can be done from home:

    1. Practice every song or exercise we’ve recently covered in the Essential Elements book. See if you have a favourite song or exercise and practice it until you can play it by memory without looking at the book.
    2. Take three of the songs or exercises from earlier on in the book that we learned a long time ago. Make your own versions of the songs/exercises by changing things like rhythm, dynamics, articulation (e.g. staccato, accented notes) and the order of note pitches?
    3. Can you compose your own short song using your instrument?
