Math

Your children can explore some fascinating mathematical possibilities in the world around them every day. For example, math can be found in nature: look for symmetry in leaves; count the number of trees on both sides of your street; look at the various shapes and patterns of blooming flowers; and measure the length of sticks or rocks or math can be found in the home: look for patterns on furniture and clothing; measure the length of the dinner table or the height of the chairs; and count the different types of drinking cups in the cupboards etc. Your children will be learning math and enjoying it too! The activities below can be done anytime and anywhere.

Patterns

  • Find a variety of leaves, pine cones, rocks etc. while outside walking and have your child create a pattern with the items
  • Look for and discuss patterns in everyday items in your household with your child
  • Have your child make their own visual patterns using any of the following items; beads, blocks, cereal, stickers, coins, foam or magnetic numbers, marbles, toys, playing cards etc.
    • patterns can be made using a variety of attributes; size, colour, shape, texture (soft/hard, smooth/rough), uses (for the kitchen/for the bedroom), categories (land animal/sea animal) etc.
  • Work with your child to identify a pattern in a given set of numbers; 1, 3, 5…, 4, 7, 10…, 35, 30, 25…, 14, 12, 10… 10, 12, 15, 19… etc.
  • Find at home pattern activities on the parent page at JUMPSTART ACADEMY Math

Numbers/Number Operations

Measurement

  • Find sticks with a variety of lengths
    • have your child organize them in order from shortest to longest or longest to shortest
    • have your child measure the length of two sticks and comparing the lengths (i.e. stick A is 2 cm longer than stick B; stick C is 5 cm shorter than stick D
  • Find a variety of objects either in nature or in the home and have your child measure the length and the width of the objects
  • Find items in nature or in your household and have your child weigh the object(s)
    • have your child compare the weight of different objects
  • Look for shapes in nature (sphere, heart, star, cone, circle etc.)
