Counselling at School
Counsellors are available for 15-30 minute check-ins with students or for consultation with families or school staff. Please enquire about availability at anna.aquila@burnabyschools.ca.
Most referrals come from the School Based Team. Referrals for counselling support at school may also come from the student or family.
As per the Infant’s Act of BC, consent from a parent and/or guardian is usually required for counsellors to connect with children in a therapeutic relationship.
Counselling can help a people to gain a new understanding about feelings, develop problem-solving skills, and learn new ways of coping with stressors. School Counsellors provide support based upon goals related to making the school day successful. Referrals to community resources will be made for all other goals.
I use a variety of evidence based approaches in practice. These include Child Centered Play Therapy, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, Synergetic Play Therapy and trauma informed approaches. For an increased understanding of play therapy, view the video below published by the Association for Play Therapy.
