Bonjour les familles!

In Math this week, students practiced addition strategies. We worked on “La magie de 9”, or regrouping when adding with 9. We played a game called “Bouge” where players can bump their opponents off the board by adding the totals correctly. We practiced addition facts to 20 with a math-themed book called Des chats et des chatons! We used addition triangles to see the relationships between addition and subtraction (ie: 7+3 = 10; 10 – 3 = 7.) We used hundreds charts to help with addition of one- and two-digit numbers. So many strategies to use!

For literacy, we read in small groups and build stamina with reading to self. On Tuesday, we rotated through stations of Lalilo.com (a class favourite already!), Tic-Tac-Mots (also popular), and free creative writing. We will be starting up a weekly routine of writers’ workshop next week! For writing on Friday, we created a book to celebrate one classmate’s birthday!

We read a wonderful story titled Rouge: L’histoire d’un crayon.Rouge: Lhistoire dun crayon It is the story of a crayon whose label does not quite fit his character, just as it can be for people sometimes. It is a story of self-discovery and acceptance. One of my favourites!

For grammar, we tried out our first attempt of Écris la salle, or “Write the Room”. Students searched around the classroom to find cards which each had a different sentence written on them. Students were asked to write down the common noun of each sentence on their tracking sheet. Everyone did an excellent job! Next week, we will go on the hunt for proper nouns.

Three more fabulous scientists shared their presentations this week. We learned about air pressure with the Tricky Cards and Air Rocket experiments, and surface tension with the Pepper Chase experiment. Bravo, les scientifiques!

On Tuesday, we planted flower bulbs in our garden to wait for spring! They were mystery bulbs, so the colours, sizes and shapes of the flowers will be a surprise!

Thank you for supporting your child with their at-home reading. Daily reading will develop fluency, comprehension, and confidence in our growing readers! Re-reading the same text is also helpful, as each time we read, we can learn something new. For the new Journal de lecture, please note that students do not have to write a sentence every day – only once per week!

Please remember to complete and return the “Tout à propos de ma culture” worksheet for Monday. We will begin writing our culture flipbooks next week based off of notes and conversations you have at home. Thank you so much for your support!

I hope you have a wonderful weekend! Take care!
