Hello Division 9!

This week passed by quickly with a few shorter days. It was wonderful to connect with you through Zoom for Intake Meetings. I was glad to get to see you without masks, and to talk about your fabulous children!

On Tuesday, our class ran our own version of the Terry Fox run. Altogether, our small class ran 92 laps of the field! As a school we will be measuring and counting the kilometres we run, and tracking this on a map of Canada.

This week in Math we worked on ways of representing numbers in the hundreds, built upon math vocabulary, and began learning ways of comparing numbers (ie: greater-than and lesser-than symbols, Base 10 Blocks, and breaking numbers into component parts).

For French, we worked on the sound “oi” and did a lot of writing! We began a reading log of books read in class, and will be practicing increased independence with this before students begin taking home their reading logs (“Mon journal de lecture”) for at-home daily reading. I will begin assigning daily reading tasks once students are familiar with the expectations.

On Wednesday, we sampled an inquiry lesson with a bit of research on leaves and trees. Each student selected a leaf to observe and note the details of. We wrote and sketched our observations, wrote the questions we wondered, and then used reference pages and class iPads to research the type of trees that our leaves came from. As always, I was impressed with the focus and hard work of this class!

We kept working on our self portraits for Art. These are taking longer than expected but will be magnificent once complete. Every student has been very attentive to their work, and is putting in great effort for mixing just the right colour or adding particular details. I will share a photo of the brilliant collection once complete.

On Friday, we spent most of the morning on a reflection of gratitude, in recognition of Thanksgiving this upcoming weekend. As a class, we brainstormed all that we might be grateful for, and then we began writing. Students were incredibly focused throughout this work – I am truly amazed by the work ethic of this class! – and many chose to fill their pages with writing, though the expectation was only 3 sentences. Check out their awesome work!

There will be no school on Monday for Thanksgiving. I hope you all have a restful and peaceful weekend! See you on Tuesday, Division 9.
