They are distinguished by their <a title=\"Zygodactyl\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zygodactyl\">zygodactylous<\/a> feet, their separately mobile and <a title=\"Stereoscopic vision\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stereoscopic_vision\">stereoscopic<\/a> eyes, their very long, highly modified, and rapidly extrudable tongues, their swaying gait, the possession by many of a <a title=\"Prehensile\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Prehensile\">prehensile<\/a> tail, crests or horns on their distinctively shaped heads, and the ability of some to change color. Colors include pink, blue, red, orange, turquoise, yellow, green, brown, and black. Uniquely adapted for climbing and visual hunting, the approximately 160 species of chameleon range from <a title=\"Africa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Africa\">Africa<\/a>, <a title=\"Madagascar\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Madagascar\">Madagascar<\/a>, <a title=\"Spain\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Spain\">Spain<\/a> and <a title=\"Portugal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Portugal\">Portugal<\/a>, across south <a title=\"Asia\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Asia\">Asia<\/a>, to <a title=\"Sri Lanka\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lanka\">Sri Lanka<\/a>, have been <a title=\"Introduced species\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Introduced_species\">introduced<\/a> to <a title=\"Hawaii\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hawaii\">Hawaii<\/a>, <a title=\"California\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/California\">California<\/a>, and <a title=\"Florida\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida\">Florida<\/a>, and are found in warm habitats that vary from <a title=\"Rain forest\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rain_forest\">rain forest<\/a> to <a title=\"Desert\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Desert\">desert<\/a> conditions. The Greek word is a <a title=\"Calque\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Calque\">calque<\/a> translating the <a title=\"Akkadian language\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akkadian_language\">Akkadian<\/a> <em>n\u0113\u0161 qaqqari<\/em>, literally &#8216;lion ground&#8217; (adjectives follow nouns in Akkadian).<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chameleon#cite_note-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<h2>Classification<\/h2>\n<p><strong>Family Chamaeleonidae<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Subfamily <a title=\"Brookesiinae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Brookesiinae\">Brookesiinae<\/a><\/li>\n<li>the Subfamily <a title=\"Chamaeleoninae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chamaeleoninae\">Chamaeleoninae<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Evolution<\/h2>\n<p>The oldest known chameleon is <em><a title=\"Anqingosaurus\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anqingosaurus\">Anqingosaurus brevicephalus<\/a><\/em> from the Middle Paleocene (about 58.7\u201361.7 <a title=\"Mya (unit)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mya_%28unit%29\">mya<\/a>) of China.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chameleon#cite_note-Digimorph-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>Other chameleon fossils include <em><a title=\"Chamaeleo caroliquarti\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chamaeleo_caroliquarti\">Chamaeleo caroliquarti<\/a><\/em> from the Lower Miocene (about 13\u201323 <a title=\"Mya (unit)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mya_%28unit%29\">mya<\/a>) of the Czech Republic and Germany, and <em>Chamaeleo intermedius<\/em> from the Upper Miocene (about 5\u201313 <a title=\"Mya (unit)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mya_%28unit%29\">mya<\/a>) of Kenya.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chameleon#cite_note-Digimorph-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The chameleons are probably far older than that, perhaps sharing a common ancestor with <a title=\"Iguanidae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iguanidae\">iguanids<\/a> and <a title=\"Agamids\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Agamids\">agamids<\/a> more than 100 <a title=\"Mya (unit)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mya_%28unit%29\">mya<\/a> (agamids being more closely related). Since fossils have been found in Africa, Europe and Asia, chameleons were certainly once more widespread than they are today.
