Protists<\/strong>\u00a0(\"play\"\u00a0\/<\/a>\u02c8<\/a>p<\/a>r<\/a>o\u028a<\/a>t<\/a>\u0268<\/a>s<\/a>t<\/a>\/<\/a>) are a diverse group of\u00a0eukaryotic<\/a>\u00a0microorganisms<\/a>. Historically, protists were treated as the\u00a0kingdom<\/a>\u00a0Protista<\/strong>, which includes mostlyunicellular<\/a>\u00a0organisms<\/a>\u00a0that do not fit into the other kingdoms, but this group is contested in modern\u00a0taxonomy<\/a>.[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Instead, it is “better regarded as a loose grouping of 30 or 40 disparate\u00a0phyla<\/a>\u00a0with diverse combinations of\u00a0trophic<\/a>\u00a0modes, mechanisms of\u00a0motility<\/a>, cell coverings and\u00a0life cycles<\/a>.”[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n

The protists do not have much in common besides a relatively simple organization[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u2014either they are unicellular, or they are\u00a0multicellular<\/a>\u00a0without specializedtissues<\/a>. This simple cellular organization distinguishes the protists from other eukaryotes, such as\u00a0fungi<\/a>,\u00a0animals<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0plants<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The term\u00a0protista<\/em>\u00a0was first used by\u00a0Ernst Haeckel<\/a>\u00a0in 1866. Protists were traditionally subdivided into several groups based on similarities to the “higher” kingdoms: the unicellular “animal-like”\u00a0protozoa<\/a>, the “plant-like”\u00a0protophyta<\/a>\u00a0(mostly unicellular\u00a0algae<\/a>), and the “fungus-like”\u00a0slime molds<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0water molds<\/a>. These traditional subdivisions, largely based on superficial commonalities, have been replaced by\u00a0classifications<\/a>\u00a0based on\u00a0phylogenetics<\/a>\u00a0(evolutionary<\/a>\u00a0relatedness among organisms). However, the older terms are still used as informal names to describe the\u00a0morphology<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0ecology<\/a>\u00a0of various protists.<\/p>\n

Protists live in almost any environment that contains liquid water. Many protists, such as the\u00a0algae<\/a>, are\u00a0photosynthetic<\/a>\u00a0and are vital\u00a0primary producers<\/a>\u00a0in ecosystems, particularly in the ocean as part of the\u00a0plankton<\/a>. Other protists, such as the\u00a0Kinetoplastids<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Apicomplexa<\/a>, are responsible for a range of serious human diseases, such as\u00a0malaria<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0sleeping sickness<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
