Historically, protists were treated as the\u00a0<a title=\"Kingdom (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kingdom_(biology)\">kingdom<\/a>\u00a0<strong>Protista<\/strong>, which includes mostly<a title=\"Unicellular organism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unicellular_organism\">unicellular<\/a>\u00a0<a title=\"Organism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Organism\">organisms<\/a>\u00a0that do not fit into the other kingdoms, but this group is contested in modern\u00a0<a title=\"Taxonomy\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Taxonomy\">taxonomy<\/a>.<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protist#cite_note-Simonite2005-0\">[1]<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0Instead, it is &#8220;better regarded as a loose grouping of 30 or 40 disparate\u00a0<a title=\"Phylum\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phylum\">phyla<\/a>\u00a0with diverse combinations of\u00a0<a title=\"Trophic\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trophic\">trophic<\/a>\u00a0modes, mechanisms of\u00a0<a title=\"Motility\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Motility\">motility<\/a>, cell coverings and\u00a0<a title=\"Biological life cycle\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biological_life_cycle\">life cycles<\/a>.&#8221;<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protist#cite_note-isbn1-4051-4157-3-1\">[2]<\/a><\/sup><\/p>\n<p>The protists do not have much in common besides a relatively simple organization<sup><a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protist#cite_note-urlSystematics_of_the_Eukaryota-2\">[3]<\/a><\/sup>\u2014either they are unicellular, or they are\u00a0<a title=\"Multicellular organism\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Multicellular_organism\">multicellular<\/a>\u00a0without specialized<a title=\"Tissue (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tissue_(biology)\">tissues<\/a>. This simple cellular organization distinguishes the protists from other eukaryotes, such as\u00a0<a title=\"Fungi\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fungi\">fungi<\/a>,\u00a0<a title=\"Animal\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Animal\">animals<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Plant\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plant\">plants<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The term\u00a0<em>protista<\/em>\u00a0was first used by\u00a0<a title=\"Ernst Haeckel\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ernst_Haeckel\">Ernst Haeckel<\/a>\u00a0in 1866. Protists were traditionally subdivided into several groups based on similarities to the &#8220;higher&#8221; kingdoms: the unicellular &#8220;animal-like&#8221;\u00a0<a title=\"Protozoa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protozoa\">protozoa<\/a>, the &#8220;plant-like&#8221;\u00a0<a title=\"Protophyta\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Protophyta\">protophyta<\/a>\u00a0(mostly unicellular\u00a0<a title=\"Algae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algae\">algae<\/a>), and the &#8220;fungus-like&#8221;\u00a0<a title=\"Slime mold\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Slime_mold\">slime molds<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Water mold\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Water_mold\">water molds<\/a>. These traditional subdivisions, largely based on superficial commonalities, have been replaced by\u00a0<a title=\"Biological classification\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Biological_classification\">classifications<\/a>\u00a0based on\u00a0<a title=\"Phylogenetics\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phylogenetics\">phylogenetics<\/a>\u00a0(<a title=\"Evolution\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Evolution\">evolutionary<\/a>\u00a0relatedness among organisms). However, the older terms are still used as informal names to describe the\u00a0<a title=\"Morphology (biology)\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morphology_(biology)\">morphology<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Ecology\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ecology\">ecology<\/a>\u00a0of various protists.<\/p>\n<p>Protists live in almost any environment that contains liquid water. Many protists, such as the\u00a0<a title=\"Algae\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Algae\">algae<\/a>, are\u00a0<a title=\"Photosynthesis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Photosynthesis\">photosynthetic<\/a>\u00a0and are vital\u00a0<a title=\"Primary producer\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Primary_producer\">primary producers<\/a>\u00a0in ecosystems, particularly in the ocean as part of the\u00a0<a title=\"Plankton\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Plankton\">plankton<\/a>. Other protists, such as the\u00a0<a title=\"Kinetoplastid\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kinetoplastid\">Kinetoplastids<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"Apicomplexa\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Apicomplexa\">Apicomplexa<\/a>, are responsible for a range of serious human diseases, such as\u00a0<a title=\"Malaria\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Malaria\">malaria<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a title=\"African trypanosomiasis\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African_trypanosomiasis\">sleeping sickness<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Protists\u00a0(\u00a0\/\u02c8pro\u028at\u0268st\/) are a diverse group of\u00a0eukaryotic\u00a0microorganisms.
